Green Packaging Initiative - Roundtable Discussion

Introduction

The demand for green packaging is expected to grow due to increasing consumer awareness for sustainable products and government legislations implemented to reduce municipal waste packaging being sent to landfills. The United States alone has projected an increase of 3.9% yearly to US$41.7 billion in 2014, consuming 58 billion pounds of green packaging materials (Green Packaging by Freedonia Group, Jan 2011). To address the demand and technical challenges on Green Packaging, SIMTech is pleased to organize a consortium on Green Packaging where industry partners could participate in green packaging related R&D projects, networking, knowledge-sharing, business match-making, technology assistance and consultancy activities. Join us to explore innovative green packaging ideas and identify areas to increase the performance and sustainability of Green Packaging technology.

About the Speakers

Dr Yu Suzhu is a research scientist in forming technological group of SIMTech. She obtained her PhD degree in materials science from Nanyang Technological University. Dr Yu’s expertise is in polymer composites, nanocomposites, polymer foam synthesis and modification.

Dr Goh Kiah Mok is currently a Principal Research Engineer in SIMTech, A*STAR. He graduated from Acadia University, Canada in 1988 with a B.Sc (Computer Science), from University of Manitoba, Canada with a MSc (Computer Science), and from Cranfield University, UK with an Engineering Doctorate. Dr Goh has over 20 years of research and industrial experience and has assumed various responsibilities of project leader, group manager, centre manager, and team leader. Have extensive project management, research and industrial experience and he specialises in factory systems design, factory communications, equipment controllers, embedded systems and semiconductor equipment SECS/GEM standards.

Mr Christopher Low is a researcher in the Surface Technology Group.  His research interests include electrochemical processes, corrosion protection and sustainable manufacturing technology.

Dr Fatida Rugrungruang is a scientist in the field of sustainability & technology assessment. She currently works predominantly on carbon footprint assessment and formulation of carbon reduction strategies for sustainable manufacturing. Projects have included those in electronics, metal parts forming, recycled materials, foods and construction sectors. She holds a PhD and Bachelor’s degree (First class honour) in Manufacturing Engineering from University of New South Wales, Australia.

Dr Ng Boon Ping received his B.E. and Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University in 2005 and 2010 respectively. Currently, he is a researcher of Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech). He joined SIMTech in 2009 as part of the precision measurement group and also participated in the In-house development of Scanning Near-field optical microscopy. He have some experience in measurement and characterization of materials on optical properties, thin-film thickness, surface roughness and CMMs.  His research interests include nanometric precision  measurements, Scanning Probe microscopy techniques and optical detection methods.

Dr Patrick Shi was conferred PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering by University of Glasgow in 2006 and 2001 respectively. Upon his return to Singapore, he joined the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), A*STAR, as a Scientist. Dr Shi's research interest is in the area of sustainability assessment. His knowledge in manufacturing processes facilitates his work on carbon footprint assessments on products and services. Dr Shi has conducted carbon footprint assessments for significant players in various industrial sectors.
