Workshop on EBSD Sample Preparation & Material Characterisation for Manufacturing Industry
Date: 23 Nov 2010 - 23 Nov 2010
Venue: SIMTech SEM Lab, Discussion Room, Valley Block, Level 3
This hands-on workshop is specifically designed for participants who are involved in EBSD specimens routinely. In this session, participants will learn the basic principles of EBSD specimen preparation techniques and identify the best preparation method for a particular material. Detailed step-by-step instructions for each technique will be provided with its associated sample preparation equipment. Speakers include Dr Winson Kuo, Applications Scientist, Oxford Instruments; Dr Jiao Huisheng, Application Specialist, Oxford Instruments; Mr Bill Toh, Gatan Specialist; Mr Kenny Lim, Application Specialist at Struers and Ms Chow Shue Yin, Application Specialist from Carl Zeiss NTS. Participants are encouraged to attend both the EBSD Seminar and Workshop on 22 & 23 November 2010. For details of the EBSD seminar programmes, please click here. This event is jointly organised by SIMTech, Zeiss, Oxford Instruments, Gatan and Struers.
EBSD is a powerful scanning electron microscope based diffraction technique that provides quantitative crystallographic analysis from regions as small as a few tens of nanometers at the surface of bulk samples. The technique has become highly automated and data acquisition rates are becoming increasingly rapid so that highly detailed maps showing a wealth of crystallographic information over large areas of a sample can be readily generated. EBSD is firmly established as an indispensable tool for the quantitative characterisation of crystalline samples and is used extensively in many materials research institutions. EBSD is being brought to an ever expanding range of applications in metals, ceramics and semiconductors, etc.
About the Workshop Speakers
Dr Winson Kuo is an Applications Scientist at Oxford Instruments. He obtained his PhD from Metallurgy and Materials at University of Birmingham in 2010. He has 10 years of research experience from both academics and industries in the field of electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), EPMA, (EDX/WDX/EBSD).During the early phase of his graduate study, he conducted a diverse range of experiments in the field of semi-conductor, ranging from the preparation of thin films, the study of its microstructure and chemical analysis using SEM and TEM, to the investigation of their thermo, mechanical and electrical properties. He is currently responsible for conducting customer demonstrations of the EDS, WDS & EBSD products, providing technical expertise, sales support, training and supporting customer sample analysis.
Dr Jiao Huisheng obtained his PhD in Metallurgy and Materials obtained from Birmingham University in 2002. He has 20 years experience in TEM and SEM for materials research as well as profound understanding of EBSD technique for more than 10 years with extensive experience in the applications of EBSD in microstructure characterising.
Mr Bill Toh is a Gatan Factory-trained Specialist who has more than 7 years of experience in supporting Gatan products in the ASEAN region.
Mr Kenny Lim is the Application Specialist at Struers.
Ms ChowShue Yin graduated from the National University of Singapore with Bachelor of Science (Honours), majoring in Physics in 1999. She joined the Institute of Materials Research & Engineering from 2000 to 2008 as Research Officer primarily to characterise materials using Transmission Electron Microscopes. She joined Carl Zeiss NTS Pte Ltd since June 2008 as Application Specialist.
