Advanced fibre reinforced composites, such as woven composites, offers the promise of solutions to structural problems in which extreme demands in multidisciplinary domains are made. However, the world economic situation implies that their cost is also essential. These new composites are generally not well described by traditional composite design, analysis. New models and new approaches must be derived, based on basic understanding of the fundamental mechanisms.
The purpose of this lecture is to demonstrate how to design the optimal woven composite (i.e. to give its composition and its fabrication process) for any new special application when only a few tests are available, when the simulated predictions are not very reliable and when it is necessary to adjust its mechanical elastic/inelastic properties and its electromagnetic properties while taking care of its weight and its price. This is solved within the Advanced Intelligent Design of Complex System Approach i.e. by coupling the existing knowledge of experts, their models, numerical results and experimental data, thanks to some special adaptive learning and optimisation techniques.

About Prof Joseph Zarka
Professor Joseph Zarka holds a Dr. es-sciences degree from University of Paris (1968) and a Civil-Mechanical Diploma from Ecole Polytechnique (1962). He is currently the Scientific Director of CADLM, France. He has recently been appointed Consultant for the International Relations of NWPU in Xian (China).
He was the Director de Researches ua CNRS, Laboratoire de Mecanique, Ecole Polytechnique, France, 1964-2004. He was Professor and Chairman of the Materials-Structures Department at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Techniques Avancess (ENSTA).From 1976 to 1981, he was the Associate Professor at Ecole Polytechnique, from 1981-1983, Professor Zarka was the Scientific Director of Centre Etudes Techniques des Mecanique (CETIM) and a part-time visiting scientist at the Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials at University of San Diego California (USA). He was also a part-time visiting professor at McGill University at Montreal (Canada).Professor Zarka has also received Honours from Fourneyron from the French Academic des Science in 1973, Jacob WAEEEMBERG from the Royal Swedish Academic of Engineering Science in 1976 and Fellow of ASME in 1999.
