Seminar on Development and Applications of Micro Tools in Micro Machining

Date: 28 Jul 2009 - 28 Jul 2009

Venue: SIMTech Auditorium, Tower Block, Level 3

The objective of this seminar is to introduce the latest technology of micro tooling applications to local industries. Recently, micro tools are increasing being used in the precision engineering of manufacturing micro-parts, particularly in the medical sectors; a good example is in the drilling of high aspect ratio (>10) micro holes on hardened steel. In this seminar, Mr Kusuyama from NS Tool Co Ltd will introduce the most recent developments of micro tools.  He will also share research insights with the industries, citing case studies and parametric data in micro machining. Participants will also gain a better understanding of SIMTech research capabilities on cutting tool research, development and manufacturing. SIMTech is committed to establishing links among overseas companies with both local relevant companies and research organisations such as research institutes, polytechnics and universities. This seminar is jointly organised by the Precision Engineering Centre of Innovation, SIMTech and Okaya (S) Pte Ltd.

Part 1 Development and applications/case studies of micro tools by Mr Takanobu Kusuyama

Micro cutting tools are expanding their applications rapidly in recent years. Machining of micro features is recognised as one of the most difficult manufacturing tasks. This presentation will focus on the following areas:

(i) Background and Development of Micro Tools (Drills & Endmills)

(ii) Micro tools nomenclature and it applications – case studies and machining data
- Award winning CBN micro end mill, the evolution of micro edge for high hardness (68 HRC) steel machining
- The world first standardisation micro ball end mill (R0.005) – enabler for new machining field in manufacturing the high precision micro parts for  fine finish surface
- Micro endmill – its tool geometries and its application on Micro drill (Ø0.01 mm) with new Mugen coating for excellent drilling performance on steel

Part 2.  Introduction of R&D capabilities in SIMTech by Mr Wu Hu

This presentation will introduce SIMTech R&D capabilities in the area of cutting tool technology and recent results.

About the Speakers

Mr Takanobu Kusuyama is an Area Leader employed by NS Tool Co. He specialises in machining of mould and die parts for electric components, and housing for the automotives industries. He has been involved in  the area of micro machining, on problem solving due to high precision requirement from mould & die customers. In 2008, Mr Kusuyama moved to the Export department to put his knowledge of machining into good use in supporting Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam & Philippine and to share his knowledge and experience in the application of using micro tools.

Mr Wu Hu is a Senior Research Engineer of the Machining Technology Group in SIMTech. His portfolio includes developing cutting tool technology and manufacturing as well as ultra precision machining.
