Tutorial: Fundamentals and Applications of Digital Image Processing for Radiography

The purpose of this tutorial session is to provide training in the use of image processing for radiography. Topics include the following:
·         Image viewing and basic functions such as contrast, brightness, gamma, correction and histogram correction 
·        Basic filters (high and low pass, median) 
·         Measurement of basic spatial resolution (based on CEN and ASTM standards) 
·         Measurement of signal noise and contrast noise ratio (based on CEN and ASTM standards) 
·    Long term stability for Computed Radiography by the standardised phantom 
·         Wall thickness measurement and corrosion depth measurement fortangential and double wall technique 
·         Comparison of digital radiographs


This is a theory cum demonstration tutorial in which participants will be provided with individual computers and software for hands-on practical interactive training during the session. Personal notebooks/laptops (Windows XP, CD/DVD-Drive) may also be used. 
Participation is limited to a maximum of 24 to allow for effective interaction with the presenter.

About the Speaker
Professor Dr Uwe Ewert obtained a diploma degree for physical and theoretical chemistry from the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1974. He received a PhD for a thesis on simulation of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra in 1979. He managed the application laboratory for ESR-spectroscopy at the Centre for Scientific Instruments (CSI) of the academy of sciences in Berlin from 1980-1989. Dr Ewert was guest faculty at the Baker Laboratory of the Cornell University in USA from 1989-1990. He is affiliated with the federal institute for materials research and testing (BAM) since 1992 and was head of the laboratory “radiation methods” from 1992 – 2000. In 2000 he was appointed as director and professor of the division “Nondestructive testing; radiology” at BAM. He is elected chairman of the German radiology committee of the German society of NDT (DGZfP; since 1997), member of the advisory board of DGZfP (since 1999) and chairman of the subcommission VA (radiation methods for welding) of the International Institute of Welding (IIW; since 2000). He is delegate at several standard committees of ISO, CEN and ASTM. 




Session 1 – Introduction to Digital Radiography
Image viewing and processing, basic imaging functions, histogram correction, filtering, measurements of spatial resolutions, signal noise and contrast ratio, stability for computed radiography

Session 2 – Applications
Wall thickness measurement and corrosion depth measurement for tangential and double wall technique, comparison of digital radiographs, filmless radiography
