Tutorial: Trends & Developments in Plating with Platinum Group Metals in the Modern Electronics Industry

Introduction

This workshop will cover the trends and current developments in plating of the Platinum Group Metals. Specifically, metals such as Palladium (and Palladium Nickel), Rhodium, Platinum and Ruthenium will be covered, presenting how the development of modern formulations has led to applications in electronics, automotive, aerospace and medical industries. Current developments as well comparisons with more traditional markets will also presented. The need to develop environmentally friendly products and how this has been approached will be highlighted.

About the Speaker

Mr Steven Burling is currently employed by Metalor Technologies UK as Sales and Marketing Manager Northern Europe for the Advanced Coatings Division. His key responsibilities include the introduction of new plating processes to the European Market as well as liaising with my colleagues in USA and the APAC region. He started his career in plating in 1969 working on the original trivalent chrome developments and later working on the development of hard gold plating using ultrasonic agitation. Since 1979 he has been employed by Engelhard, later to become Engelhard-Clal and which since May 2002 became a part of Metalor Technologies. He has presented many papers at various AESF conferences since 1999 related to precious metal plating and have also presented papers at conferences in Europe. Qualified as a graduate from the Southbank University in 1976 he is also a member of the Institute of Metal Finishing in the UK. In 2006 he will celebrate 37 years in the Metal Finishing industry

Those who are involved in research and development or education on surface engineering will also benefit from this tutorial as it covers fundamental understanding of various processes to practical issues and solutions in applications.
