Course Introduction

The increasing complexity of embedded applications is one of the main reasons behind the growing popularity of choosing Linux as operating system instead of developing and maintaining in-house built operating systems. Operating systems that demand a license fee for each and every installation are out-of-question for many applications that need to compete on markets like consumer electronics.

How is embedded Linux different from “normal” Linux and what is considered “normal” Linux? This is what the TIP course aims to address in this 6-week course that consists of introductory lessons on the structure of the Linux operating system; like kernel, file management and device management. It also focuses on the embedded Linux domain: techniques and tips on Linux tools for embedded development, skills required in activities like cross-compiling and techniques in tweaking the kernel, boot loader and file system for embedded platform.

Lab sessions are essential for embedded development and the concept of developing device drivers; hence deploying and testing them in an application on embedded platform will be the target in the lab sessions.

Students will gain hands-on experience in practising these activities on embedded target.

Course Outline Session 1 Linux / Unix basics, booting, building the kernel
Session 2 Cross-compiling, make-files, debugging, process / resource management
Session 3 Memory management, device management, file management
Session 4 Device drivers, loadable kernel modules, shared memory, Inter-process Communication (IPC), semaphores
Session 5 User-space / kernel space, system calls, kernel structures
Session 6 Interrupts, ISR (Interrupt Service Routine), race condition
