Workshop on Laser Materials Processing

Laser materials processing has been widely applied in a wide range of industrial applications, such as laser marking of IC packages, drilling of microvias in PCBs and printer nozzles, welding of metals and plastics, and material build-up for repair and prototypes. In this workshop, recent developments in laser-based manufacturing will be presented. These include laser nano technology, laser micro engineering, laser additive manufacturing and non-conventional lasers for manufacturing. The lectures are designed to provide an introduction to these advanced topics in laser processing. This workshop will inspire engineers and researchers to develop practical applications and generate new ideas in applying laser technologies in industry.

About Prof Lin Li

Professor Lin Li is Chair of Laser Engineering at the University of Manchester, UK. He is the Director of Laser Processing Research Centre (LPRC) in Manchester. He was recently appointed as SIMTech Visiting Fellow. Professor Li’s laser laboratory in Manchester is equipped with the widest range of laser facilities for materials processing in the UK. The LPRC currently has a research team of over 30 scientists. Professor Li is author/co-author of over 340 publications including one book. He is inventor and co-inventor of 30 patents on laser processing techniques. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal Optics and Laser Technology, member of Executive Committee of Association of Industrial Laser Users, Fellow of Institute of Electrical Engineers, member of CIRP and Director of Northwest Laser Engineering Consortium, UK. The work by the LPRC has received the Charles Mains Award, Sir Frank Whittle Award and UK House of Commons Best Engineer of the Year Award. The current research projects in the LPRC are funded by over £3 million external research contracts. Professor Li’s research interests include laser drilling, laser cutting, micro/nano engineering, surface engineering and rapid prototyping/additive manufacturing.
