SIMTech 20th Anniversary Seminar Series
Invited Research Lecture on Analytical Benchmarking Meets Data Mining: The SmartDEA Framework, SmartDEA Software, and Case Studies for Industry

Guest Speaker: Dr Gürdal Ertek, Visiting Scientist at SIMTech & Assistant Professor at Sabancı University, Istanbul, Turkey

Benchmarking is a fundamental activity performed by every company, institution, country, and individual. Analytical benchmarking refers to the application of mathematics and computation based methods for benchmarking a group of entities. The literature on benchmarking mainly focuses on the benchmarking methodologies, rather than the post-analysis of the benchmarking results. However, there can be significant insights and competitive advantage that can be gained from the detailed analysis of the results data.

Data mining is the growing field of computer science that aims at discovering the hidden patterns and coming up with actionable insights. The overwhelming majority of data mining literature focuses on developing more efficient and effective computational algorithms. However, the main goal and motivation of the field of data mining, the quest for practical actionable knowledge, seems to be forgotton in most of these algorithmic studies.

This seminar will present the SmartDEA Solver framework for integrating analytical benchmarking with data mining. Specifically, we consider the results of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and describe how these results should be structured so that they can be mined easily with readily-available data mining tools and methods.

We also present the SmartDEA software that implements the SmartDEA methodology, and present three case study applications, in the automotive, wind energy, and apparel retail industries.

Participants of the seminar will be entitled to a free licensed copy of the commercial SmartDEA software ($1000 retail value).
