Training

The Translational Laboratory in Genetic Medicine (TLGM) provides a stimulating training environment for undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows interested in genetics-based translational research. The TLGM's highly collaborative environment fosters interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the basis of human diseases, with a focus on neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, and pharmacogenomics. Techniques and approaches employed include human genetics, genome engineering, disease modeling in animal and stem cell-based systems, and preclinical therapeutic testing.

A number of scholarship programs are available to support international candidates interested in pursuing undergraduate research attachments and graduate (PhD) studies in Singapore:

SINGA

Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)

The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) provides a unique opportunity to pursue your PhD in Singapore. SINGA is collaboration between the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Upon successful completion, students will be conferred a PhD degree by either NTU, NUS or SUTD.

 

Eligibility

  • Open to all international students
  • Graduates with a passion for research and excellent academic results
  • Good skills in written and spoken English
  • Good reports from academic referees

 

Award Terms

  • Attractive monthly stipend over 4 years of PhD studies, which can support you comfortably. The stipend amount is SGD 24,000 annually, to be increased to SGD 30,000 after passing Qualifying Examination.
  • Full support for tuition fees for 4 years of PhD studies.
  • One-time SGD 1,000 Settling-in Allowance
  • One-time Airfare Grant of SGD 1,500

 

Application Procedure:

There are two intakes per year (one in January, and one in August).The following supporting documents will be required for the application:

    Compulsory:

  • Identity card or Passport
  • A recent passport-sized photo in JPEG/PNG format
  • University Academic Transcripts (in English translation)
  • Degree Scrolls (in English translation) or a letter of certification from the university on your candidature if your degree scroll has not yet been conferred.

    Not compulsory but good to include (if available):

  • GRE / IELTS / TOEFL / SAT I & II / GATE results

SIPGA

Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award (SIPGA)

The Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award (SIPGA) supports short-term research attachments for international students at A*STAR. It provides a unique opportunity for top overseas students to experience the vibrant scientific environment at A*STAR. This award will normally be for students in the later years of a Bachelor or Master level program.

 

Eligibility

  • Open to international students in Biomedical, Science and Engineering related disciplines who are undergraduate students in their third or fourth year, or Master students

 

Application Procedure:

Interested candidates should submit the following documents directly to their group of interest at the TLGM:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • English-Translated Transcripts of Bachelor and Master Studies (if any)
  • Copy of Identity Certificate/ Passport
  • Recommendation letter (if any)
  • Proposed start and end date of attachment
  • Research group of interest: a) neurodegenerative diseases, b) cardiovascular disease, or c) pharmacogenomics
