A*GN Shanghai Alumni Dinner

Reconnecting and Strengthening Cross-Border Ties

On 16 May 2026, A*STAR Global Network (A*GN) ExCo members, Dr. Pauline Tay and A/Prof. Danny Soon, hosted an intimate alumni dinner at Hazel Kitchen and Wine Restaurant in Jing’an District, Shanghai. The gathering brought together A*GN alumni and associates for an evening of reconnection, reflection, and meaningful exchange.

The session was attended by a distinguished group of alumni who have since taken on senior leadership and influential roles across academia, industry, and the investment space. Among them were leaders from institutions such as Fudan University Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Centre, and prominent biotech and investment firms across China.

A Warm and Collegial Reunion

The evening unfolded with a notably warm and relaxed atmosphere, more akin to a family reunion than a formal networking session. Conversations flowed naturally, with attendees reconnecting over shared experiences at A*STAR and reminiscing about “the good old days” across various research institutes.

Discussions quickly expanded beyond nostalgia, touching on career journeys, leadership experiences, and emerging opportunities for collaboration. Despite their seniority and achievements, many alumni demonstrated humility, openness, and a strong collaborative spirit, reflecting the enduring values of the A*STAR community.

Strong Affinity with Singapore and A*STAR

A key highlight from the evening was the strong and lasting connection that alumni continue to hold with Singapore and A*STAR. Many shared that they still maintain close personal and professional ties to Singapore, with frequent visits due to family and ongoing collaborations.

Several alumni are already involved in cross-border initiatives. For example, in education partnerships between institutions such as Fudan University and NTU, underscoring the continued relevance and impact of A*STAR’s global network.

Encouragingly, participants expressed a strong willingness to support A*STAR and Singapore when called upon, whether through facilitating partnerships, making introductions, or contributing to joint initiatives.

Opportunities for Future Collaboration

The session surfaced strong interest in expanding collaborations between Singapore and China, particularly through alumni networks. Many attendees shared that they would be happy to:

  • Facilitate connections within their organisations and wider networks
  • Support cross-border research and innovation collaborations
  • Participate in joint symposia, speaking engagements, or mentorship initiatives

These insights reaffirm the value of A*GN as a platform to catalyse partnerships and strengthen international engagement.

Overall, the Shanghai alumni dinner served as a meaningful touchpoint in reconnecting with A*GN’s overseas community, highlighting not only the global impact of A*STAR alumni, but also their enduring commitment to collaboration and contribution.

As A*GN continues to expand its international outreach, such gatherings play a vital role in strengthening relationships, unlocking opportunities, and sustaining a vibrant global alumni network.
