    Tackling drug-resistant tuberculosis strains

    Researchers from A*STAR’s Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) have found that activating the enzyme Sirtuin-1 in the body can boost the body’s ability to fight drug-resistant tuberculosis. Sirtuin-1 is known to regulate metabolic function in the body and plays an important role in ageing and inflammation. Sirtuin-1 activators can also be found in red wine and grape skins. Dr Amit Singhal, who led the study, said that when Sirtuin-1 is activated in the body, it induces the tuberculosis bacteria in the body to devour themselves, in a process known as autophagy.
