11th February 2019 - At a recent visit to Racer Technology- a local medical device manufacturer- SMS Koh Poh Koon saw firsthand how the company had benefited from A*STAR’s Model Factory- seamlessly integrating the technological solutions into its manufacturing operations.

Racer first learnt about Industry 4.0 during a learning journey to Germany’s smart factories in 2016- where Mr Willy Koh- CEO of Racer- saw the benefits of advanced manufacturing. Mr Koh recognised that adopting these technologies for the company’s operations in Singapore would increase its overall efficiency and agility in responding to customer demands especially in a high-mix- low-volume manufacturing environment.

After a visit to the Model Factory@A*STAR- the company chose to implement four modular technological solutions which could be tailored to its needs. These solutions allow Racer to have real-time visibility of its production schedules- so that it can quickly identify and address problems which arise during manufacturing processes. Since then- Racer has seen the efficiency of its factory floor increase by up to 70%- and enjoyed cost savings of up to 70%. Fifteen Racer staff have also benefited from A*STAR’s model factory training module- which has increased their proficiency in using the latest manufacturing technologies. Many of them had been with the company for more than 30 years and needed to refresh their skillsets.
