Singapore Research Attachment Programme

The Singapore Research Attachment Programme (SRAP) fosters centre-to-centre collaborations between Singapore and global research institutions in key scientific domains. Awarded collaborations will support 6 to 10 overseas-based postgraduate and PhD students, to undertake 1 to 2 years research attachments in Singapore under joint supervision.

SRAP At A Glance

  • Centre-to-centre collaborations between an overseas research centre and any Singapore research centre
  • SRAP supports the 1 to 2 years research attachments of 6 to 10 postgraduate and PhD students, over a 3 to 5-year project term
  • Application deadlines: 1 May and 1 November

Centre and Programme Eligibility

  • Singapore researchers from RIE institutions (e.g. A*STAR, autonomous universities, academic medical centres) may apply, together with their overseas collaborator(s).
  • Applications must involve at least one Singapore-based and at least one overseas-based research centre or programme on a centre-to-centre collaboration.
  • The lead researcher must be based in Singapore and must hold a primary appointment of at least 75% in a local publicly funded organisation.

Student Eligibility

  • Overseas-based postgraduate and PhD students matriculated in an overseas university
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree ideally with at least a Second-Class (Upper) Honours or equivalent
  • Must not have received an ARAP award in the past

Funding Duration

  • Project is funded for 3 to 5 years, supporting each student for 1 to 2 years research attachments.

Coverage

Awardees are provided with the following during their attachment in Singapore:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Monthly housing subsidy
  • One-time airfare grant
  • One-time settling-in allowance
  • One-time IT allowance
  • Medical insurance
  • Conference allowance
  • Visa cost

*Terms of award may be reviewed periodically

Evaluation Process

SRAP Panel Composition:

  • Proposals are assessed by a panel comprising key representatives from across Singapore’s research ecosystem.

Assessment Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated against five key criteria

  • Alignment with national research priorities​
  • Research impact & sustainability
  • Track record of research centres/programmes
  • Strength of collaboration
  • Clarity, feasibility and novelty

Applications must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Written in English
  • Indicate lead researchers and any additional researchers from both the Singapore and overseas centres or programmes
  • Endorsed by the heads of both Singapore and overseas centres or programmes prior to submission
  • Submit your application to A*STAR electronically via this link by the application deadline

1. What are the eligibility criteria for students to be nominated for SRAP? 
Students must be either a matriculated or newly enrolled PhD students at the collaborating university. We encouraged to onboard students with a Bachelor’s degree with Second-Class (Upper) Honours or equivalent.

2. Are students required to undertake English language proficiency tests to be considered for SRAP? 
The programme does not require students to undertake English language proficiency tests. However, students should demonstrate some level of English proficiency as the main medium of communication in Singapore is English.

3. Can we onboard less than 6 students for the project term?
SRAP directly funds minimally 6 students per award with each student spending 1-2 years of attachment physically in Singapore.

2. Can SRAP awardees extend their attachment beyond two years? 
SRAP provides funding support for a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years. The awardee may check with the A*STAR Research Institute or supervisor for funding opportunities if he/she wishes to extend his/her attachment beyond the two years.

3. Does A*STAR cover the university tuition fees for the duration of SRAP?
A*STAR does not cover the tuition fees at the university but will fund the student’s stipends and allowances as per the award terms for the duration of SRAP.
