FAQs for National Science Scholarship (BS-PhD)
Application & Selection
Application for the NSS (BS-PhD) commences on 1 July every year and closes on 1 March of the following year.
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed between March and May.
2. My examination results are not available yet. Can I apply for the scholarship?
Yes, you may apply with your school preliminary results. Please send in your final results as soon as you receive it.
3. Do I need to secure a place at an overseas university before applying for the scholarship?
No, you may apply for the scholarship even if you have not secured admission to any overseas university yet.
Please note that you should only accept the overseas university offer after obtaining A*STAR's approval for your choice of university and course of study.
4. If I am going for or currently serving my national service (NS), do I apply for the scholarship after I have received my A-Level results or after I have completed NS?
You may apply before you complete your NS, or even before you receive your A-Level results (i.e. with your prelim results). If you are successful in your application, an in-principle offer will be made to you, and we will hold the scholarship for you until you complete your NS.
5. The new A-Level syllabus offers both research-based and examination-based H3 subjects, is there a preference for either type of H3 subjects?
Applicants will be shortlisted based on their results for a relevant H3 subject (i.e. at least a 'merit' in one maths or science H3 subject), and not whether it is a research-based or examination-based subject.
6. What is the selection process?
Shortlisted applicants will undergo 2 rounds of interviews
First round interviews: Mid-March to April
Final round interviews: April to May
7. What qualities does A*STAR look for in a scholar?
In addition to academic excellence and a passion in science, we are looking for people who are committed to a research or research-related career in Singapore. A*STAR is making a significant investment in each scholar and the aim is for every scholar to be part of Singapore's Research, Innovation and Enterprise ecosystem.
8. Am I able to attend interviews via Teleconference/Video Conference?
We conduct face to face interviews for all shortlisted applicants, unless otherwise stated.
9. What is the estimated timeframe for the entire selection process?
It would approximately take 2-3 months from the application deadline. We request you to submit the complete application (i.e., including all required supporting documents such as education certificates and referee reports) to be considered for the award of the scholarship.
Please note that all academic referee reports must be submitted within 7 working days of submission of the online application. Kindly remind your referees about this requirement.
10. Do I need to have prior research experience?
While having prior research experience helps to boost your application, it is not mandatory. A*STAR will make a holistic assessment of each application and take into consideration other factors such your achievements in science/maths related competitions and CCAs.
If you are interested to gain hands-on research experience, you may reach out to the Research Institutes or the Principal Investigator(s) directly for attachment opportunities.
Citizenship
Yes. However, you will be required to apply for Singapore Citizenship if you are awarded the scholarship. Non-Singaporean males are required to serve National Service prior to the commencement of undergraduate studies.
Please note that the mid-term NSS (BS-PhD) is open to Singaporeans only.
Course / University
The NSS (BS-PhD) provides up to 8 years of funding for undergraduate and PhD studies, typically 3 years for undergraduate and up to 5 years for PhD studies.
2. If I am awarded the NSS (BS-PhD), can I study in the same university for both my undergraduate & PhD degree?
You are strongly encouraged to explore a different university (and country) for your undergraduate and PhD studies so that you can benefit from the different education systems, social and work environments, and build up your research and academic networks.
3. What courses am I allowed to undertake?
Areas of study that are supported under the NSS (BS-PhD) include Computer Science, Engineering & Technology, Physical Sciences, and Biomedical Sciences. In particular, A*STAR is seeking talent whose research interests are aligned with Singapore’s priorities in areas such as Green Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, and Food Science and Technology. The NSS (BS-PhD) does not support medical and veterinary degrees.
Please note that each applicants proposed universities and courses will be subject to A*STAR's approval. Successful applicants should only accept a university offer after obtaining A*STAR's approval for their choice of university and course of study.
4. Can I choose not to do a PhD under this scholarship?
The NSS (BS-PhD) is a through-train scholarship that enables scholars to pursue undergraduate and PhD studies, and aimed at developing research talent and the next generation of scientific leaders for Singapore. Scholars funded under this scholarship are required to obtain PhD qualification in order to maximise their contribution to research and innovation in Singapore. If you are undecided about a research career at this point, you may wish to consider applying for the mid-term NSS (BS-PhD) scholarship, or an A*STAR NSS (PhD) scholarship after you have completed your undergraduate degree.
5. Is there a recommended list of overseas universities which we can choose from?
A*STAR values diversity in training, and we want our scholars to explore and study at top overseas universities.
Attachments
1. Do we have to come back for an attachment during our university vacation? Yes, all NSS (BS-PhD) scholars are required to undergo a compulsory 8-week research attachment at an A*STAR Research Institute (RI) after their first year of studies. NSS (BS-PhD) scholars are also required to undergo a 1-year research attachment at an A*STAR RI upon completion of undergraduate studies, prior to PhD commencement. These attachments will enable you to gain first-hand research experience, exposure to projects with industry, and a better understanding of the impact of A*STAR's research to industry and Singapore's economy.
2. Where will I be attached? You will be attached to an A*STAR Research Institute (RI). You can indicate your preference for which RI you would like to be attached to.
3. Can I come back for more than 1 attachment? Yes, you can. The request should be put up at least 6 months in advance.
Annual Return Flights
Yes, and we encourage all overseas scholars to come home once a year. Scholars are eligible for 1 return flight per academic year, subject to the applicable policy.
2. What if we can't return to Singapore every year?
We understand that some scholars may not be able to return every year because you may need to attend summer school, participate in a summer lab attachment at your respective universities or work on your research projects. However, you should note that the 8-week research attachment is compulsory and you should plan for it accordingly.

2. Can I apply for a PSC scholarship and get a job in A*STAR as part of the service commitment period?
PSC scholarships are catered to scholars suitable for administrative work in the civil service while A*STAR's National Science Scholarships (NSS) aim to train and nurture research scientists. If you are interested in R&D and committed to a career in science, we strongly encourage you to apply directly to our NSS (BS-PhD).
3. I understand that NSS (BS-PhD) scholars are expected to obtain good grades. Is it difficult to achieve that?
We strongly encourage our scholars to gain varied experience in research, innovation and enterprise, and to invest their time and effort in other non-academic areas of development and networking for an all-rounded and multidisciplinary education.
As the NSS scholarship includes funding for PhD studies, scholars should work towards being eligible to apply for admission to good PhD programmes and universities.
4. I am very keen on embarking on my PhD studies after completing my bachelor’s degree, is academic performance the only factor A*STAR considers when deciding PhD support for scholars?
Academic performance is not the only factor that A*STAR considers when deciding whether to support scholars for PhD studies. Beyond academics, A*STAR also values attributes such as passion and aptitude for science, alignment of research interest with A*STAR's research directions, and the ability of the scholar to work well in a lab environment.
We assess these traits during the scholars' 8-week attachment at A*STAR during their undergraduate years, as well as during the 1-year research attachment in an A*STAR lab after completing their undergraduate studies.
5.Is it possible to obtain the NSS (BS-PhD) and pursue undergraduate studies locally and do the PhD component abroad?
The NSS (BS-PhD) is for students who wish to pursue both their undergraduate and PhD studies overseas. If you are keen to do your undergraduate studies locally, you may consider applying for the NSS (PhD) after completion of your undergraduate studies.
6. What are the criteria and factors that determine the type of PhD support for NSS scholars?
A*STAR values attributes such as passion and aptitude for science, as well as alignment of research interest with Singapore's research priorities and strategic needs.
Scholars will have career counselling sessions and advisory meetings during the one-year research attachment to discuss their PhD plans, research interests and career goals.

Application
NSS (PhD) applicants should have secured a place in an overseas university, or be in the process of applying to one or more overseas universities.
2. I have applied for the NSS (PhD). Can I also be considered for the AGS scholarship?
Applicants can indicate in the NSS (PhD) application form, if they wish to be considered for the AGS in the event that they are found suitable.
3. Is it recommended to do a Masters before my PhD? If so, when do I do my Masters?
It is not necessary for you to have a Masters before you apply to A*STAR's PhD scholarships.
4. What is the application and interview process like?
Please submit an online application with all supporting documents (e.g. academic credentials) and a description of the proposed research area, by the stipulated deadlines stated on our website.
Do note that 2 academic referee reports are required, and to be submitted within 7 working days of submission of the online application. Referees will receive an auto-generated email with a link to complete an online referee report. You may wish to give them a heads-up before you apply so that they can submit in time. Referees can be academic referees from universities or supervisors/PIs whom you have worked with.
For shortlisted candidates, there will be 2 rounds of interviews to assess their suitability for the scholarship. First round of interview will be with a panel of A*STAR scientists, while the final round of interview will be with the senior management of A*STAR.
5. When should I apply for the scholarship and how long will the application process take?
The scholarship application process typically takes about five months from the submission of a complete application to the notification of results. You are advised to plan ahead and submit their applications early.
6. I do not have any prior experience in research, is there any training provided before I embark on my PhD studies?
Awardees of the NSS (PhD) scholarships are required to complete a compulsory 1-year research attachment at one of our A*STAR Research Institutes (RIs) before embarking on PhD studies.
7. Can the research attachment requirement be waived?
Applicants with prior research experience at A*STAR (beyond their undergraduate Final Year Project) may request a waiver of the compulsory research attachment year, subject to approval. However, scholars are strongly encouraged to complete the attachment as it provides valuable exposure to research work at ASTAR Research Institutes and helps build connections with A*STAR researchers.
8. What is the academic requirement for applying to an A*STAR scholarship?
A*STAR will make a holistic assessment of each application along with a good class of honours degree, and take into consideration other factors such as research experience and achievements.
9. Will a few years of Research Officer experience in an A*STAR RI be considered favourably in my scholarship application compared to an application from a fresh graduate?
As these are national scholarships, all applications will be treated equitably and reviewed holistically such as on academic track record, publications and research exposure/experience. Your experience as a Research Officer will be beneficial as part of your overall portfolio for the scholarship application.
Citizenship
Yes. Permanent residents and non-Singaporeans who are awarded the NSS (PhD) will be required to take up Singapore citizenship no later than the third year of your PhD studies. For non-Singaporeans, you are to minimally obtain your Singapore Permanent Residence before the commencement of your studies. If you are holding both Singapore citizenship and foreign citizenship/PR, you are required to take such steps as are necessary to divest your foreign citizenship or permanent residency status as soon as possible.
Service Commitment
Upon completion of their PhD studies, scholars will serve at one of A*STAR’s research institutions for three years.
NSS (PhD) scholars will serve at one of A*STAR’s research institutions for four years.
2. I am currently holding a scholarship for my undergraduate studies from another government ministry/ agency. Can I still apply for the NSS (PhD)?
Please clarify the policy and guidelines from your sponsoring organisation before applying to A*STAR.
3. Will I be over-qualified for the general job market as a PhD student and what are my career prospects after PhD studies?
Having a PhD is highly advantageous for careers in Research and Development (R&D). R&D is a key pillar of Singapore’s innovation-driven economy, and PhD talent with strong scientific expertise play a vital role in advancing the nation’s research capabilities.
Singapore’s R&D ecosystem has expanded significantly over the past decade, comprising a growing network of public and private research organisations. Many global corporations have also established major research units in Singapore, creating strong demand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and PhD-qualified professionals.
Recognising the diversity of interests and strengths among our scholars, A*STAR provides multiple pathways to develop and chart their careers across different domains. NSS (PhD) scholars typically serve their bond in one of A*STAR’s Research Institutes. Selected scholars may also be deployed, after their initial two years at A*STAR, to roles in industry, corporate R&D labs, public administration, technology enterprises, spin-off companies, or academia.
PHD Studies
During the PhD studies, A*STAR scholars receive competitive monthly allowance besides full sponsorship of the tuition fees. Please refer to the coverage section of the scholarships NSS (PhD) for the detailed list of allowances provided under the scholarships.
2. In the event that I am awarded the scholarship from A*STAR, am I still subject to the requirements of the respective universities for the conferment of my PhD degree?
Scholars are required to satisfy the coursework requirements specified by the University conferring the PhD degree. The graduation requirements shall be in accordance with the prevailing rules for the PhD degree applicable at the university. Scholars are encouraged to discuss the requirements with supervisors.
3. Is it possible to change my course of study/research midway through my PhD programme?
All scholars need to seek A*STAR's written permission before changing their course of study/research project. Each case will be assessed on its own merit. However, scholars are encouraged to consider their research area seriously before commencing their PhD studies as a mid-point change of their research focus may badly affect their PhD progress.
4.Once I have selected the host university abroad, will I be able to visit the university to meet up with potential supervisors and assess the research lab facilities?
NSS (PhD) awardees will be provided with some level of funding to visit the overseas universities that they intend to enrol in, prior to their PhD studies, subject to the applicable policy.
5. Does the A*STAR PhD scholarship provide funding for consumables and research fees?
A*STAR does not pay for consumables or research fees. Fees involved in the lab should be borne by the university.
6. What happens if I take more time to complete my PhD beyond the funding period under the NSS (PhD) scholarship?
If you need more time to complete your PhD, you will have to seek approval from A*STAR’s management for your PhD extension.
7. Will there be any post-doctoral training abroad after the conferment of my PhD?
NSS (PhD) scholars who complete their PhDs in less than 5 years may consider using their remaining funding for post-doctoral training. Scholars will need to seek A*STARs written approval for the use of their remaining funds for post-doc training.
8. Is it possible to finish a PhD in 2.5 to 3 years?
A PhD typically spans over 4 to 5 years, but there have been cases where scholars were able to complete their PhD in 2.5 to 3.5 years.
9. Do PhD students have work-life balance?
While the PhD course load will differ depending on the programme and the specialisation, time management is important in achieving work-life balance.
10. What are some of the non-traditional (non-UK/US) countries A*STAR scholarship holders have gone to and which universities do they attend?

A*STAR Graduate Scholarship
FAQs for A*STAR Graduate Scholarship
Application
Applicants can indicate in the NSS (PhD) application form if they wish to be considered for the AGS in the event that they are found suitable.
2. I have already applied for the AGS scholarship. Do I need to make a separate application to the partner universities?
Applicants need to apply separately to obtain admission to the intended partner university. The AGS award is conditional upon awardees obtaining confirmation of placement at one of the partner universities.
3. Should I apply for the scholarship after I have gotten a place at the university?
AGS applicants should apply for university admission concurrently with your scholarship application.
4. I am interested to do my PhD studies locally under the AGS, but my supervisor does not have an existing collaboration with A*STAR. Can I still apply for the AGS?
The nominated supervisor(s) has to be approved by A*STAR. You may want to ask your proposed supervisor to check with their respective universities or Research Institute(RI) Human Resources to enquire the process to be approved as an AGS Supervisor. In most cases, the main and co-supervisors should hold at a minimum, the designation of Principal Investigator or Principal Scientist at an A*STAR RI.
5. Is it recommended to do a Masters before my PhD? If so, when do I do my Masters?
It is not necessary for you to have a Masters before you apply to A*STAR's PhD scholarships.
6. What is the application and interview process like?
Applicants have to submit at least 2 referee reports and a description of their proposed research area and all their academic credentials. There will be at least 2 rounds of interviews involving the top management of the Biomedical Research Council or Science & Engineering Research Council, and researchers from A*STAR’s Research Entities.
7. When should I apply for the scholarship and how long will the application process take?
The scholarship application process typically takes about five months from the submission of a complete application to the notification of results. You are advised to plan ahead and submit their applications early.
8. Will I be eligible for an A*STAR Scholarship if I have a Second Class Lower degree?
While the criteria for applying for an A*STAR Scholarship is a Second Class Upper degree, A*STAR will make a holistic assessment of each application, and take into consideration other factors such as research experience and achievements.
9. Will a few years of Research Officer experience in an A*STAR RI be considered favourably in our scholarship application compared to an application from a fresh graduate?
Research Officers with A*STAR gain research experience under the mentorship of senior scientists, as well as knowledge of A*STAR, its mission, and its research directions. Such experience will be beneficial when you apply for an A*STAR scholarship.
Citizenship
Yes. International students who are awarded will be required to serve a 3-year service in Singapore-based companies without commitment to any specific organization. The area of work should preferably be in Biomedical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering or Computing and Information Sciences.
Service Commitment
AGS scholars who are Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents are not required to serve a bond. Non-Singaporean AGS scholars without Singapore Permanent Residency are required to serve a three-year bond in a Singapore-based company.

A*STAR does not pay for consumables or research fees. Fees involved in the lab should be borne by the university. For AGS, A*STAR and the partner universities have entered into agreement where both are fully aware of the financial responsibilities under the AGS Partnership Programme.
5. Are there overseas opportunities for scholars under the AGS programme?
AGS scholars may be funded to conduct research at an overseas university/lab for a minimum period of 3 months, and up to one year (max) midway through their PhD programme. Scholars must show evidence that their supervisors have existing collaborations at the overseas institutes and that the research done away from Singapore will contribute to their overall PhD progress. Supervisors need to fully endorse this time abroad. Scholars' PhD progress should not be impeded by the time spent overseas.
In addition, AGS scholars can apply for the A*STAR International Fellowship (AIF) which is an overseas post-doctoral attachment of up to 2 years after the completion of their PhD studies. The AIF will be fully funded by A*STAR.
6. What happens if I take more time to complete my PhD beyond the funding period under the AGS scholarship?
If you need more time to complete your PhD, you will have to seek approval from A*STAR’s management for your PhD extension.
7. Will there be any post-doctoral training abroad after the conferment of my PhD?
AGS scholars are eligible for the A*STAR International Fellowship (AIF). You can apply for the AIF within 4 years after the completion of your PhD studies.
8. What are the advantages of pursuing a PhD in Singapore compared to overseas?
Pursuing a PhD in Singapore will provide you with good exposure to Singapore's R&D needs, and you will benefit from the excellent curriculum in the local universities and mentorship of top scientists and supervisors. You will also have opportunities to form networks with other researchers and various R&D organizations in Singapore which will both enhance collaboration as well as your future career development.
9. Is it possible to finish a PhD in 2.5 to 3 years?

A*STAR International Fellowship
FAQs for A*STAR International Fellowship
Application
1. How long does it take to process my application?
The processing time for applications is up to 5 months from the date that you submit the complete application to A*STAR Graduate Academy
office to the date that you are informed of the application outcome.
2. Is there any application deadline?
We process applications for 2 intakes. 1st October of the preceding
year for February's commencement, and 1st March of current year for August's commencement.
3. What is the application and interview process like?
Your application will be reviewed
upon submission of all required documents, and you may be requested to provide more information while we assess your application. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend at least 2 rounds of interviews, and other
test(s) where applicable.
Prior to the first round of interview, you will need to seek endorsement from your proposed A*STAR Research Institute supervisor, and Executive Director, for you to serve the 3-year service commitment period
at the chosen Research Institute after the post-doctoral training under the AIF. You will be given 15 minutes to present your proposed research project, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A during the first round of interview. .
4. I am currently based overseas. Can I attend the interviews virtually?
The interview process comprises both virtual and in-person sessions. Candidates who are unable to attend in person due to valid reasons may submit a written request to attend the interview virtually.
5. Do I have to contact a Principal Investigator at an Overseas University/Institution?
Yes, you should contact an overseas university/institution supervisor to establish a project proposal prior to applying for AIF. The AIF award is conditional upon you having a confirmed place at the approved university/institution.
6. Are there any criteria for the proposed overseas university/institution?
The proposed overseas university/institution should be a leading institution in your proposed research area.
7. I am currently holding a post-doctoral position overseas. Can I use the AIF funding to continue my research?
Most applicants who apply for the AIF scholarship have not embarked on post-doctoral training yet. If you have already
started your overseas post-doctoral training, you can still apply but we would have to assess the relevance and value of the research area you are working on and the strength of your overseas supervisor/institution.
8. Am I allowed to receive monetary support from the overseas university /institution?
This would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and it is subject to approval.
9. Can I propose any research topic?
You should propose a research topic/area that is aligned to A*STAR's research
direction and of relevance and value to the A*STAR Research Institutes. We strongly advise you to discuss with the A*STAR Research Institutes of interest to you before you propose a topic.
10. What are some of the non-traditional (non-UK/US) countries A*STAR scholarship holders have gone to and which universities do they attend?
A*STAR scholarships holders have attended universities for their undergraduate/postgraduate studies/post-doctoral in countries such as:

2. Is there any monetary support for my spouse and family?
No. The award does not include additional financial support for spouses or family members.
3. Who is responsible for consumables and research-related fees during the collaboration?
A*STAR does not cover consumables or research-related fees. These costs are to be supported by the overseas university.
Citizenship
Yes, non-Singaporeans intending to take up Singapore citizenship can apply for the AIF. You are to obtain your Singapore citizenship before the commencement of your post-doctoral training. You may undergo a research attachment at an A*STAR Research Institute, based on your own merits, while completing the citizenship conversion process.
During The Post-Doctoral Training
All scholars need to seek A*STAR's written permission before changing your research project. Each case will be assessed on its own merit. Scholars are encouraged to consider your research area seriously before commencing your post-doctoral studies as a mid-point change of your research focus may badly affect your progress.

If you need more than time to complete your post-doctoral training, you will have to seek approval from A*STAR for the extension.

About the Award
The A*STAR Research Internship Award (ARIA) offers curated research-based internship opportunities at A*STAR Research Institutes for Singaporean undergraduates in STEM fields from both local autonomous universities and overseas universities.
2. What opportunities and benefits will I gain from this internship?
You will gain hands-on research experience and exposure to industry-relevant and translational science. Working alongside A*STAR researchers, you will develop practical laboratory skills, deepen your scientific knowledge, and build your professional network. This experience can support your academic progression and prepare you for a future career in research or related fields.
Eligibility
Singaporean undergraduates (≥ 2nd year) in computing and information science, engineering and technology, physical sciences, or biomedical/life/food sciences may apply for ARIA.
2. Is there a minimum internship duration to fulfil?
The minimum internship duration is 16 weeks to 24 weeks (during semester) or 12 weeks (during vacation), subject to the university’s minimum internship duration requirements stipulated by your faculty/school discipline.
3. Is there a minimum academic grading requirement?
Yes. Applicants should have at least an Honours (Distinction) or a cumulative GPA of 4.0/5.0 (or equivalent).
4. Can a non-Singaporean/Singapore Permanent Residents apply for ARIA?
No, ARIA is exclusively for Singaporean undergraduates.
5. Do I need prior research experience?
Prior experience is preferred, but not necessary. However, candidates should possess interest, aspiration, abilities and/or strong inclination towards a STEM career in Research & Development.
6. What is the monthly allowance for ARIA?
ARIA awardees will receive a monthly allowance ranging from $1600 to $2000.

You will be required to indicate your choice of specific ARIA Project Title when submitting your application form. As you are allowed to apply for multiple projects, you are required to submit one form for each project you intend to apply for.
Application Procedure and Selection
1. How to apply/ submit an ARIA Application?
To apply for ARIA, first explore available research projects using the filter function on the Research Projects page to find one that matches your interests. Next, gather the required documents, including a photocopy of your NRIC, your latest university transcript, your official junior college or polytechnic transcript, and your most updated resume. Complete the ARIA Application Form, attach all documents, and submit it through the portal or as instructed by your university’s internship office.
2. When can I start applying for ARIA?
ARIA applications open in late June and late November. You may submit as early as 6 months before your school internship portal application window opens.
3. Is ARIA applicable only for credit-bearing internship requirement module?
ARIA is applicable for both non-credit bearing as well as credit-bearing faculty-based internships. This can include Industrial Attachment [Research]/Professional Placement, Summer Vacation internships, and Final Year Internship (FYI).
4. What is the selection/interview process?
If you are shortlisted, you can expect to be e-interviewed by the Research Institute’s project supervisor. The outcome of the interview will be notified by email.
5. What qualities does A*STAR look for in an ARIA awardee?
In addition to academic excellence and a passion in science, we are looking for students who are committed to a research or research-related career in Singapore. A*STAR is making a significant investment in each awardee and the aim is to groom

Upper Sec Science Award (Upper Sec)
Nominations are submitted by schools and reviewed by the A*STAR Graduate Academy (A*GA). Students interested in the award should express their interest to their school’s Talent Development team or Form Teacher.

Polytechnic Science Award (Poly)
1. Who is eligible for the A*STAR Science Awards (Polytechnic)?
The award is open to Year 2 and Year 3 students and and it is tenable for up to 2 years. It provides a tuition subsidy of up to S$2,500 per year and an annual allowance of S$2,000. Awardees are required to complete a full-time research attachment at an A*STAR Research Institute, either as an internship or a Final Year Project.
2. How do I apply for the award?
Application for the award is made through nominations by the Polytechnics, typically in April each year. Students who are interested in the award may indicate your interest to your polytechnic coordinator / lecturer.

Nominations submitted by the polytechnics will be reviewed by A*STAR and nominees may be invited for an interview with A*STAR as part of the selection process.

Eligibility
Students must be either a matriculated or newly enrolled PhD students at the collaborating university. They should possess at least a Bachelor’s degree with Second-Class (Upper) Honours or equivalent.
2. Are students required to undertake English language proficiency tests to be considered for ARAP?
The programme does not require students to undertake English language proficiency tests. However, students should demonstrate some level of English proficiency as the main medium of communication in Singapore is English.
3. Can students enrolled in an integrated MSc-PhD programme be nominated for ARAP?
Students would be placed on ARAP only during the PhD phase.
Coverage
Awardees are provided with the following during their attachment in Singapore:

- Conference allowance
- One-time IT allowance
2. Can ARAP awardees extend their attachment beyond two years?
ARAP provides funding support for a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years. The awardee may check with the A*STAR Research Institute or supervisor for funding opportunities if he/she wishes to extend his/her attachment beyond the two years.
3. Does A*STAR cover the university tuition fees for the duration of ARAP?
A*STAR does not cover the tuition fees at the university but will fund the awardee’s stipends and allowances as per the award terms for the duration of ARAP.

Applying for Internship at ASTAR Research Institutes
1. I am interested in an attachment with A*STAR? Will there be opportunities for me?
Students who are interested to undergo a research attachment at an A*STAR RI can write directly to the respective research institutes listed under the council tabs below. Please submit your Curriculum Vitae and latest examination results via this online form and indicate the preferred area of research and period of attachment in your request. The minimum period of attachment is two months.
2. I am keen to do an attachment with A*STAR, but I am only available for 1–2 weeks during my vacation. Is that possible?
A*GA only processes full-time attachments of at least two months. For shorter attachments, please contact potential supervisors directly with your CV and academic transcripts.
3. I am currently a Student Pass holder. Am I eligible to do an internship with A*STAR?
Yes. Students holding a valid Student Pass are eligible to apply for an internship at A*STAR.
4. I am currently on Dependant Pass (DP). Am I eligible to do an internship with A*STAR?
Dependant’s Pass holders must apply for an Employment Pass, S Pass, Work Permit or Letter of Consent (LoC) if they wish to work in Singapore. Please refer to the following:
5. I am a student studying at an overseas university. Does A*STAR allow remote internship?
Overseas students should discuss potential remote work arrangements directly with their prospective supervisor. Feasibility will depend on considerations such as intellectual property, logistics, and expected work outcomes.
6. I have completed my attachment with A*STAR. May I request for a letter to acknowledge that I have ever done my attachment with A*STAR?
Please approach your supervisor at the research institute, who will be able to generate a letter of certification for your attachment from the A*STAR Student Management Portal (ASMP).
