Augmenting Maritime Network Coverage with VDES

The VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), also known as Automatic Identification System (AIS) 2.0, is emerging as a promising solution to eliminate communication blind spots in busy ports like Singapore.  Combining terrestrial and satellite components, VDES provides seamless connectivity beyond the range of traditional coastal stations.  With a maximum range of 70-100 kilometres for terrestrial VDES and global coverage through satellite VDES, this technology significantly enhances maritime communications.

VDES offers higher bandwidth, improved security, and greater flexibility compared to the current AIS system.  It enables real-time maritime traffic tracking, secured ship-to-ship and ship-to-port communication, and supports e-Navigation strategies.  By integrating VDES with existing maritime communication networks, ports can ensure continuous, reliable connectivity for vessels in their waters.  This technology advancement enables more advanced digitalization use cases, and promises to revolutionize maritime operations, enhancing safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.
