SME Tech Day 2024
SME TECH DAY 2024
Theme: INNOVATE FOR A DEEP TECH FUTURE
A*STAR's SME Tech Day 2024 brought together local enterprises to seize new opportunities for innovation as we advance towards a deep tech future. The event showcased the stories of local enterprises, facilitated the exchange of ideas and knowledge, and fostered valuable connections and potential partnerships within the deep tech ecosystem.
Guest-of-Honour Minister of Manpower and Second Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Tan See Leng shared challenges and benefits of adopting deep tech and reiterated the Government’s committment to supporting business and local enterprises to stay competitive in a deep tech future.
As part of SME Tech Day, we also hosted our annual T-Up Awards Ceremony to honour the achievements of local enterprises that have elevated their businesses through the T-Up programme. Our guest speakers, Dr. Joel Li, Co-founder and CTO of Cosmos Innovation and Dr. Seri Lee, Co-founder and CTO of KoolLogix, shared valuable insights from their experiences.
Insights from the Frontier of Deep Tech
AI meets Solar: Pushing the Boundaries of Clean Energy for a Sustainable Future
SYNOPSIS:
Cosmos Innovation started with a clear mission: to redefine how solar and semiconductor technologies are developed using Artificial Intelligence (AI). It set out to push the boundaries of what's possible by merging AI with physical sciences and building a team dedicated to innovation. Despite early scepticism and many hurdles, the company stayed focused on its vision. Along the way, they learned that real breakthroughs come from taking risks, embracing uncertainty, and persevering through every challenge. Today, Cosmos Innovation is using AI to create ultra-efficient solar panels that capture more energy from the sun, moving them closer to a more sustainable future.
Biography of Speaker
Dr Joel Li is co-founder and CTO of Cosmos Innovation, an AI startup building next-generation solar and semiconductor technologies. Their AI platform can accelerate process development from lab to mass production and enable building new devices at a fraction of the time and cost needed by conventional methods.
Cosmos Innovation is backed by leading investors including Innovation Endeavors (fund co-founded by Eric Schmidt), Xora Innovation (early-stage arm of Temasek), Demis Hassabis (CEO of Google DeepMind) and Two Sigma Ventures. The company has been featured in leading news outlets globally including TechCrunch, Yahoo!Finance, Tech in Asia, The Business Times and AsiaOne. Cosmos Innovation was selected as one of the leading startups in the world by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as part of the Technology Pioneers 2024 Cohort.

Innovation Journey Towards A Deep Tech Future
Cooling The Future: Innovation At The Core Of Data Centres
SYNOPSIS:
KoolLogix is a paradigm-shifting heat removal system for cooling high-performance data centres. It is an innovative liquid-assisted air-cooling solution that uses waste heat from servers to remove heat without the use of a pump or a compressor. This mechanism makes KoolLogix the most energy efficient waste-heat induced, gravity driven, passive heat removal system that furthers sustainability of current and future data centres and creates value for meeting the ESG goals.
In this short presentation, the thermo-physical mechanisms incorporated in KoolLogix is highlighted, and the 10-year journey of the A*STAR-ERS/KoolLogix collaboration partnership which resulted in a series of successful development and deployment of paradigm-shifting thermal management solutions for data centres are recounted. The presentation will close with a glimpse of KoolLogix’s Solution Development Roadmap bearing the continuation of the A*STAR-KoolLogix partnership into the future.
Biography of Speaker
Dr Seri Lee is co-founder and CTO of KoolLogix Pte Ltd. He has an extensive technical background and operation management experience in the execution of engineering programmes with a primary focus on research and development of new technologies and solutions for electronics cooling.
Dr Lee previously held positions at Nanyang Technological University, Intel Corporation, Pipeline Micro, Inc., Nextreme Thermal Solutions, Aavid Thermal Technologies, and the University of Waterloo. He has published more than 60 technical papers and holds 18 US and international patents. He lectured numerous professional courses at various institutions and conferences, including the ASME Satellite Course on Commercial Application of Heat Sinks. Dr Lee served as the General Chair of the IEEE SemiTherm International Symposium in 1998 and received the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer Division's best paper award in 2004.
