Understand Nature’s Complexity: 3D Whole Tissue Imaging with the UltraMicroscope Platform
Visualising biology like never before – In 3D, intact, and in-depth
Visualising intact tissues in 3D has remained a challenge for life sciences. At the A*STAR, scientists developed advanced tissue clearing methods that, together with Miltenyi Biotec’s UltraMicroscope Blaze™, enable fast, high-resolution imaging of large samples. Unlike conventional systems, the Blaze™ minimises photodamage by illuminating samples with a thin sheet of light, capturing clear images plane by plane.
This collaboration makes it possible to reconstruct whole organs and tissues in unprecedented detail, supporting research in neuroscience, developmental biology, and disease modelling. Through the A*STAR–Miltenyi Biotec Center of Excellence, these capabilities are now accessible to researchers across Singapore and the region, advancing discoveries in spatial biology and accelerating translation from research to application.

Next-Generation Eye Screening for Systemic and Ocular Diseases
One scan, early insights for better health
A routine eye scan could soon do much more than check vision. Researchers at A*STAR and the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) have developed the Digital Ophthalmology platform, which applies artificial intelligence to retinal and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.
Trained on extensive clinical datasets, the platform can detect signs of up to 16 conditions, from cataracts and glaucoma to cardiovascular and kidney disease. Its models achieve accuracy comparable to experienced ophthalmologists. One of its key capabilities is detecting papilledema, a swelling of the optic nerve that may indicate severe brain disorders, allowing doctors to act earlier in emergencies.
The team is also expanding the platform to integrate multimodal data which combines eye images with clinical risk factors and genetics to broaden its diagnostic reach. Designed to be low-cost, scalable, and easy to deploy, this innovation shows how A*STAR’s computing research and SERI’s clinical expertise can be translated into accessible tools for early detection and prevention.

PREPARE Data Capture System: The Future of Real-time Infectious Disease Research and Surveillance in Singapore
Building readiness today for the outbreaks of tomorrow
The PREPARE Data Capture System is a secure, real-time platform for infectious disease research and surveillance, designed to strengthen Singapore’s outbreak preparedness. Developed by the A*STAR, in collaboration with the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and 10 public hospitals, it provides daily, de-identified clinical data to track disease prevalence, severity, and outcomes.
Through encrypted pipelines and interactive dashboards, health authorities gain early visibility into severity indicators such as hospitalisations, ICU admissions, oxygen requirements, case trends, and demographics. These insights support faster, evidence-based adjustments to hospital protocols, clinical care, and public health interventions.
Already live with dengue and influenza data, PREPARE demonstrates how research in bioinformatics and secure health data integration can be translated into operational platforms. Looking ahead, its flexible, privacy-preserving design positions it to support wider regional preparedness, ensuring responses to future outbreaks are guided by timely, high-quality clinical evidence.

Turning Everyday Moments into Mental Health Insights
Clinical-Grade Direct-to-Patient Infrastructure for Scalable Mental Healthcare
Mental illness is one of the world’s leading health burdens, yet two-thirds of cases go untreated due to stigma, limited resources, and lack of standardised measures.
Universal Health is tackling this challenge through its direct-to-patient infrastructure, a suite of interoperable tools designed for healthcare providers, insurers, pharma companies, and governments. By enabling passive monitoring through its W3LL Companion app that runs in the background, Universal Health gathers and analyses behavioural insights to deliver mental health risk assessments at 91% accuracy and tailored interventions to reduce up to 95% of care costs. The W3LL Insights dashboard supports clinicians with remote patient monitoring (RPM), and W3LL Data-as-a-Service aggregates anonymised wellbeing data to guide population-level strategies. Developed with A*STAR, W3LL’s algorithms were refined for mobile deployment and adaptive interventions, ensuring clinical rigour with scalability.
Validated against established clinical standards, Universal Health closes that gap with objective, real-time monitoring of mental health risks to deliver localised, tailored interventions the moment they are needed. It’s time to move beyond reactive care models built only on self-reported symptoms.
