Engineering Biomolecules for Health and Biomedical Applications

The IMCB Biomolecular Engineering & Technologies (BET) Division advances the discovery, design and application of biomolecules and enabling technologies for human health. It aims to transform fundamental knowledge of RNA, proteins, peptides, enzymes and genomes into new research tools, diagnostic platforms and therapeutic modalities. 


Our research spans RNA science, protein and peptide engineering, genome and epitranscriptome engineering, synthetic biology, biocatalysis and molecular delivery. By integrating mechanistic biology with high-throughput screening, directed evolution, computational design and translational development, we create technologies that address challenging biological and therapeutic problems.

RNA & Nucleic Acid Technologies
Our team develops RNA-based technologies and nucleic acid medicines for rare, chronic and genetic diseases. We combine RNA biology, oligonucleotide chemistry, delivery, genome and epitranscriptome engineering, and preclinical evaluation to create new diagnostic, biotechnology and therapeutic platforms.

Protein & Peptide Engineering
We engineer proteins, macrocyclic peptides and mini-proteins to engage challenging biological targets. Directed evolution, display technologies, phenotypic screening and biophysical characterisation support target validation, hit discovery, biosensing and the development of new therapeutic modalities.
Bet Synthetic Biology Molecular Technologies
Synthetic Biology & Molecular Technologies
We harness microbial systems, enzymes and biosynthetic pathways to produce complex molecules and build scalable technologies for health and biomanufacturing. Our work integrates genetic and enzyme engineering, AI-assisted design and automated workflows.
