National Science Scholarship (Masters) Scholar

It took a while before Samuel Sze knew what he really wanted to do. After a degree in mechanical engineering at Boston University, he got a job in the corporate world and joined a start-up in Singapore that developed autonomous vehicles (AV) for the port. Samuel was part of the team that was developing the optics to enable the AVs to better process visual information captured, and thus be more autonomous and reliable. Samuel really enjoyed being plunged into such deep tech. But while the allure of the corporate world was strong, it was Samuel's involvement in a revolutionary start-up that truly ignited his passion.

Amidst the labyrinth of technological complexities, Samuel encountered his calling. The beauty of developing optics for AVs wasn't just a job; it was an inspiration. The technology of building such cutting-edge tech which would benefit society resonated with him. Samuel said

You know when it becomes more than just a hobby: when this is what you want to do in your free time, when you are willing to spend time researching it even on your weekends. When you just want to dig and find out more, because you like it so much. Then it becomes clear.

That’s what propelled him to pursue a Masters programme. He applied for and received the A*STAR National Science Scholarship (Masters). He received offers from Stanford University (USA), Oxford University (UK), and ETH (Zürich). Three different countries, three different environments. He decided on Engineering Science at Oxford University. While Stanford University and ETH (Zürich) had their allure, it was Oxford University's alignment with his passion for robotic optics and its global reputation in Engineering Science that made the decision clear.

As he gears up to return to A*STAR after graduation, Samuel looks forward to advancing his work, contributing to the institute's research, and paving the way for future innovations.

Cheers to Samuel's relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation. May every twist and turn in his journey be guided by curiosity and passion
