Nextevo – Transforming Pineapple Leaf Waste into Sustainable Tableware

Nextevo, in collaboration with Omni Plus Systems (OPS) | Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), is revolutionising the tableware industry by upcycling pineapple leaf waste into high-performance polymer composites. This innovative solution creates durable, compostable materials for multi-use and single-use tableware, reducing reliance on fossil-dependent polymers and lowering the carbon footprint of traditional materials like paper and wood. Aligned with Singapore's Green Plan, this technology promotes a zero-waste society by addressing the limitations of current disposable products, such as non-degradable microplastics and moisture sensitivity.

The objectives

Global Waste Crisis

22 million metric tonnes of pineapple leaf waste are burned or landfilled annually, while 69 million tonnes of polymers end up as single-use waste

Sustainability Challenge

Current materials have high carbon footprints or are non-reusable
Nextevo’s solution repurposes these waste streams into durable, cost-effective, and compostable resins that decompose within 12 months. These resins are food-safe, heat-resistant, and support scalable production methods like injection molding and thermoforming.

The impact

Nextevo’s technology enables a shift toward a circular economy, offering a scalable alternative to fossil-based and high-carbon materials. It provides industries and consumers with greener, reusable solutions that align with global sustainability goals. This innovation not only mitigates environmental degradation but also positions Nextevo as a leader in sustainable material development across multiple sectors.
