Handling of Future Fuels – Successful First Methanol Bunkering Operation in the Port of Singapore

On 27 July 2023, Singapore achieved a global milestone by conducting the world’s first ship-to-containership methanol bunkering operation at the Raffles Reserved Anchorage. This groundbreaking event, supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) along with government agencies and research institutes, marked Singapore's inaugural methanol bunkering operation. Enabled by A*STAR’s AI-based methanol plume model, this initiative provided critical insights into potential risks associated with methanol handling and established guidelines for effective prevention, control, and mitigation.

This operation exemplifies Singapore’s commitment to adopting future fuels in a safe and efficient manner, positioning the nation as a forerunner in sustainable maritime fuel solutions.

The objectives

Pioneer Safe Methanol Bunkering Operations

Establish protocols and models to ensure safety in handling methanol as an alternative fuel
