I²R Research Team

Dr Sun Hongbo is the Head of the  Satellite Communications & Sensing Division at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R), A*STAR. He lead the division in the development of niche and innovative technologies on communication, navigation and services for the satellite, aviation and maritime sectors. The current research focuses include scalable phased array antenna for satcom, space-based VHF communication system for aviation, and space-based VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) for maritime applications.
 
Prior to I²R, he was with Temasek Laboratories at NTU as a Senior Research Scientist and Program Manager. His research interests lie on radar and RF sensing, phased array antenna system, and more recently, satellite communication system for aviation and maritime applications. He has authored/co-authored one book chapter and more than 80 technical papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Between 2004 and 2011, he served as the member of IEEE P1672 Working Group for drafting IEEE STD 1672 Ultrawideband Radar Definitions. Since 2015, he has been the Associate Editor for research journals Electronics Letters and Frontiers in Signal Processing, and the Guest Associate Editor for IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letter. He was the chair of IEEE AESS/GRSS Joint Singapore Chapter for two terms in 2016-2017 and 2022-2023, and the TPC member / Session Chair in numerous IEEE conferences. Currently he is also serving as the Mentor under the IEEE AESS Professional Networking & Mentoring Program and an IEEE AESS Distinguished Lecturer.
