Transforming Construction Monitoring with AI and Robotics
24 Jul 2024
Workplace safety in the construction industry is critical not only for safeguarding the well-being of employees but also for enhancing overall productivity by minimising project delays caused by accidents and injuries. As the digital landscape evolves, especially in places like Singapore, there are increasing regulations on the utilisation of cutting-edge technologies to ensure compliance and reduce safety risks1.
Aligning with national initiatives to enhance workplace safety, A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (A*STAR I²R) has developed advanced technologies and solutions to address safety and compliance challenges in the construction industry.
3D Mapping
Traditional methods of tracking and monitoring construction sites demand significant manpower and time. To address this, ASTAR I²R has developed a solution that reduces manpower needs while ensuring project efficiency, safety, and quality. This involves fast, autonomous 3D mapping, which was successfully demonstrated at an operational construction site. The accuracy of these maps was directly compared against a 3D Building Information Model (BIM). Additionally, ASTAR I²R developed the capability to visually identify installed components and completed tasks, such as painting and tiling, on construction sites.
Geo-referencing for Underground Services
In new built-up estates, multiple infrastructure services such as gas, water, sewage, and telecoms are often placed underground. Contractors face challenges in accurately locating these services before commencing reworks or enhancements, as failure to do so can lead to serious issues like puncturing gas pipes or cutting telecommunication lines. To mitigate these risks, A*STAR I²R focuses on creating accurate geo-referenced 3D maps of new underground services, improving the safety and efficiency of construction projects.
AI-enabled Safety monitoring system to promptly detect Safety Non-compliance
A*STAR I²R has developed an AI-enabled safety monitoring system that integrates seamlessly with existing tracking systems and analytics. This system swiftly identifies and alerts stakeholders to safety issues through text and image prompts. When a non-compliance is detected, supervisors are promptly alerted and can take immediate corrective action. All feedback and rectification steps are recorded, providing contextualised content for improved understanding and response. This streamlined process enhances safety, accountability, and operational efficiency.
Building a Safer Future
Construction safety is not just about compliance; it is about creating a safer and more efficient work environment. By embracing AI, robotics, and advanced analytics, we can adopt these innovations to pave the way for a safer and more productive future in the construction industry.
