Thermogels for Biomedical Applications: Advancements in Thermogelling Polyurethane Technology

Date: Wednesday, 19 May 2021
Time: 12:30pm to 1:30pm
via Zoom Webinar

Biodegradable thermogels are a promising class of stimuli-responsive polymers in efficient drug delivery. In this talk, Prof Loh Xian Jun will present his three-component PEG-PPG-PCL thermogelling polyurethane technology as a unique platform for biomedical applications, with effects of anti-melanoma and growth inhibition of hepatocellular carcinoma. Join us as we discover valuable insights on the various drug transportation pathways and unprecedented use of these thermogels in vitreoretinal surgeries. New and exciting avenues for thermogels to be used in further biomedical applications that require higher mechanical strength will also be presented.

Prof Loh Xian Jun (Executive Director, Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR) has been recognised as a pioneer and global expert in the field of biodegradable thermogels, with experience in successful product commercialisation ranging from skin care to household care products. In 2019 and 2020, he was honoured as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics.

Facilitating the Q&A session is Prof Leopold Schmetterer (Scientific Director and Head, Ocular Imaging, Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI); and Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU)). He is currently leading a team of researchers in developing ocular and functional imaging systems in the SERI-NTU Advanced Ocular Engineering (STANCE) programme.
