Fermentation Joint Lab
The Fermentation joint lab (FJL) is a partnership between A*STAR.SIFBI and ScaleUp Bio, a Singapore-based contract manufacturing company between ADM and Temasek’s Nurasa.
As Singapore’s first food-grade fermentation and downstream processing facility, FJL offers capabilities to produce microbial-based food ingredients up to 100 L scale.
Our lab supports process and product development to enable food tech start-ups and companies, both locally and internationally, in bringing their new food innovations and prototypes to life. By partnering with industry collaborators, we play a crucial role in scaling up ingredients like bioactives, lipids, and proteins through our fermentation technology.
Our product portfolio includes alternative proteins, oils, fats, probiotics, and enzymes, which derived from microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, and fungi. Spanning 300sqm, the joint lab boasts two 100L scale food-grade fermentation biorectors and various downstream processing equipment like 15L/hour spray dryer. This can be further scaled up to a 10,000L fermentation capacity and 50L/hour spray dryer at ScaleUp Bio’s main site in Tuas, offering end-to-end contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) services in microbial fermentation.

Equipment
Designed for supporting R&D from lab to scale up, FJL supports up to 100L fermentation and offers scale-up bioprocess design to create sustainable value-added ingredients e.g. alternative lipids and protein. It provides downstream processing expertise and equipment e.g. spray-drying and cross-flow filtration systems to optimize extraction, separation, and recovery. This is coupled with analytical services and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) machine to support testing of a broad spectrum of bio-based products. This facility is built to support food tech startups in product development and scale-up efforts, streamlining the path from concept to market.
