The Large Agent Collider: Towards Robust Agent-based Modelling at Scale

[CFAR Distinguished Professor Lecture Series]
The Large Agent Collider: Towards Robust Agent-based Modelling at Scale (Hybrid event) by Professor Michael Wooldridge
6 Dec 2022 | 2.00pm (Singapore Time)

Agent-based modelling is an old idea that has seen a resurgence of interest over the past decade.

The basic idea of agent-based modelling is to model socio-technical systems at the level of individual decision-makers (agents). Agent-based models make it possible to capture aspects of systems (such as social network structures) that cannot be represented with conventional modelling techniques.

In this talk, Prof Michael Wooldridge from the University of Oxford will describe his work towards a robust engineering science of agent-based modelling, focusing on four key issues:

  1. How do we capture agent-based models transparently;
  2. How do we populate agent-based models with realistic agent behaviours;
  3. How do we calibrate agent-based models;
  4. How do we verify such models.

Prof Wooldridge will illustrate these key points with lessons learned from the COVID-19 models that were central to the UK’s decision to enter the first lockdown in March 2020.

Prof Michael Wooldridge is a Professor of Computer Science and Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, and a Programme Director for Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Alan Turing Institute. He has been an AI researcher for more than 30 years and has published more than 400 scientific articles and nine books. He is now a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for the Advancement of AI (AAAI), and the European Association for AI (EurAI).

Prof Wooldridge was the President of the European Association for AI from 2014-2016, and President of the International Joint Conference on AI (IJCAI) from 2015-2017. He was also a recipient of the Lovelace medal from the British Computer Society in 2020 – the premier computing award in the UK – and received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Association for Advancement of AI (AAAI) in 2021. He has published two popular science introductions to AI: The Ladybird Expert Guide to AI (2018), and The Road to Conscious Machines (Pelican, 2020).
