ED IEEE Awards

Dr Sun Sumei, Executive Director of Institute for Infocomm Research, has been presented two esteemed honours by the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc).  Dr Sun has been an active ComSoc volunteer, contributing dedicated services over a sustained period in multiple leadership roles.

Her first award, the inaugural 2024 IEEE ComSoc Asia Pacific Women in Communications Engineering Committee (WICE) Outstanding Achievement Award, recognizes her contributions to wireless research, technology translation, and the wireless community.  With only one esteemed award given per calendar year, this award recognizes members of the IEEE ComSoc who have been involved with the WICE, with outstanding technical work in the broad field of communications engineering, and a high degree of visibility in the field.

Dr Sun’s second award, the 2024 IEEE Communications Society Donald W. McLellan Meritorious Service Award, honours her outstanding long-term service and contributions to the IEEE ComSoc.

These prestigious recognitions are testament to Dr Sun’s steadfast commitment and intellectual rigour for advancing industry-relevant research and technology creation.  Her current research interests are in next-generation wireless communications, industrial internet of things, applied artificial intelligence, integrated communications and sensing, and integrated communications-computing-control design.

The 2024 IEEE ComSoc awards further enhance her impressive list of accolades that include Top 2% Cited Scientist (Stanford University), Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, Fellow of the IEEE, recipient of the 2023 IEEE VTS Women’s Distinguished Career Award, and recipient of Singapore National Day 2022 Public Administration Medal (Bronze).
