We are delighted to extend our warmest congratulations to Dr Le Yang of A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). She was among the three distinguished women to receive the 2023 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award. The recognition came at an awards ceremony held on 22nd November 2023 for her outstanding work on optoelectronics and flexible sensors.
Dr Le Yang, a 35-year-old trailblazer, chose to delve into the field of organic and flexible electronics driven by a conviction for innovation and a desire for a sustainable and user-centric future. Her journey in Science started with the inspiration and guidance of her mentors during her school years and university tenure. Their impact shaped her into a curious, determined, and successful scientist, particularly during her research on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) under the esteemed guidance of Professor Sir Richard Friend at the University of Cambridge.
One of her and her team’s notable contributions is the development of the WISH (Wearable In-situ Sensors for Health) technology, aimed at revolutionising health monitoring with non-invasive, real-time, and continuous chemo-sensing on the skin. Dr Yang foresees that advancements in AI, sustainability, and translational research, along with the convergence of interdisciplinary fields, will shape the future of the science industry.
A firm believer in diversity and equality in research, Dr Yang advocates for women in STEM fields. Her dedication has been recognised through the L'Oréal Women in Science program, previously a finalist in 2018 and now honoured as one of the winners in 2023. Beyond her scientific pursuits, she delights in the arts – enjoying classical singing and musical theatre, highlighting the beautiful balance between her analytical work and creative expression.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr Yang said,
Science is not a realm reserved for the few, but a world open to all who dare to explore. As women, we bring unique perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. But ultimately, we should be known for our work, rather than for our gender. The advancement of science should be inclusive and based on a diverse pool of passionate researchers, regardless of gender and background.
The L'Oréal-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science, inaugurated in Singapore in 2009, aids women scientists in advancing their research. It is an exemplary initiative for fostering inclusivity and encouraging the next generation of scientists to follow in the footsteps of pioneering figures like Dr Yang.
In addition to her achievements in the scientific field, Dr Yang is also a role model for aspiring young scientists and women in general. Her determination, passion, and dedication serve as an inspiration for others to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on society.
