IMRE Scientists Featured on CNA's Talking Point "When Power Banks Explode: How Safe Is Your Portable Charger?"

Dr Derrick Fam and Dr Jason Lim, scientists at A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) were featured on CNA's Talking Point episode on power bank safety and how batteries are being made safer in the future. During the show, Dr Fam explained about the science behind how power banks can explode through a reaction called thermal runaway, which occurs when a short circuit inside the cell happens.

Both scientists shared more about their innovation to make lithium-ion batteries safer and more sustainable by upcycling waste plastic water bottles into solid polymer electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries.
