Charting the Course for Safer, Innovative Food Production Systems

Dr. Raffael Osen, the lead of our Food Process Engineering group, has been honored with an invitation to the Food Safety Foresight Technical Meeting at the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome. This meeting brings together food scientists and experts to address implications in food safety, particularly regarding emerging food sources. Dr. Osen will contribute his technological expertise on new food sources and production systems, shaping the future of global food security.

The FAO Food Safety Foresight Meeting, focusing on the safety of emerging food systems, brings together around 25 scientists to discuss key areas like plant-based food production, precision fermentation, and 3D printing of food. These innovative topics represent the evolving landscape of food consumption, extending to less conventional sources like insects and seaweed.

Dr. Divine Njie, Deputy Director from FAO’s Food Systems and Food Safety Division highlights, this sector's constant evolution brings both opportunities and challenges, notably in identifying food safety hazards. The meeting will also include a foresight exercise to envision the future of these new food sources.

Having concluded from 13 Nov - 17 Nov, the meeting's outcomes will be crucial in guiding standards and management measures for the sector, ensuring food safety, consumer health, and fair trade.
