THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC VISIT TO SIFBI FOOD PROCESS ENGINEERING LAB

SIFBI welcomed Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Senior Vice President and his team to our Food Process Engineering (FPE) lab in Brenner, where Dr Raffael Osen, Head of Food Process Engineering (FPE) in SIFBI, showcased end-to-end spectrum for protein ingredients development, processing, texturization and formulation in high quality future foods.

We are all aware that a general limitation in food #extrusion is that testing new protein sources and developing formulations is time-, cost- and manpower intensive and furthermore, requires large amounts of raw materials. With that being said, FPE’s new 16 mm twin screw extruder can achieve throughputs of as low as 1kg/h, which allows the team to efficiently perform raw material screening of materials of limited availability e.g. ingredient prototypes, develop suitable process designs and formulation activities to facilitate scaling up. The equipment design gives us the flexibility to run low-moisture extrusion trials for textured vegetable protein (#TVP) as well as style products and high moisture extrusion trials for High Moisture Meat Analogues (#HMMA) style products. This is a boost to drive innovation and R&D for SIFBI food processing capabilities.

The visit fostered Thermo’ faith in A*STAR’s SIFBI for future collaborations and we look forward to future engagements with Thermo.
