Visit by Professor Joanne Hort
13 Jun 2025
We were excited to host Prof. Joanne Hort, Fonterra-Riddet Chair of Consumer and Sensory Science at Massey University, for a thought-provoking seminar titled "Considering Cross-Cultural Differences in Consumer and Sensory Science.
Prof. Hort unpacked the importance of moving beyond WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic) population data in sensory science—and why we need a more inclusive, global lens to truly understand food preferences, emotional responses, and perception.
As dietary habits evolve across Asia, these insights support ongoing efforts in sensory and consumer science to better understand cultural nuances in flavour, texture, and emotional response—key factors in creating foods that are nutritious, sustainable, and culturally relevant. By embracing cross-cultural perspectives, companies can better tailor food innovations that meet the evolving needs of a globally diverse consumer base.
