Enhancing Reading Aloud with SpeechEval

Teaching students to read aloud in English can be a challenging process, often requiring one-on-one attention in the classroom. With classes often numbering up to 40 students, teachers face significant difficulty in assessing each student's reading proficiency and providing personalised feedback.

The Speech Evaluation for English Reading Aloud (SpeechEval) addresses these issues using advanced language technology. This allows the automation of these assessments, allowing students to practice and improve their reading skills independently, anytime and anywhere.

SpeechEval is capable of scoring students on pronunciation and fluency, providing immediate and actionable feedback. It facilitates self-learning and enables teachers to use data for targeted interventions and improvements.

Key Features:
1. Automated Scoring: Develop a system to automatically rate students' pronunciation and fluency.
2. Qualitative Feedback: Provide detailed feedback on errors to help students improve.
3. Data Utilisation: Assist teachers by providing data for more effective teaching and intervention.

This technology has been adopted by Nomopai, a spin-off company of A*STAR in their commercial products, made available for schools.

As AI continues to evolve, its integration into educational tools like SpeechEval will be crucial in reshaping how assessments and learning processes are designed and implemented.

The development of this technology is supported by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) and National Research Foundation (NRF), under the Public Sector Translational R&D Grant Funding Initiative (TRANSGrant).
