NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION PIPELINE LEAKAGE DETECTION (COLLABORATORS - SP POWERGRID & NUS)

R&D 2

As safety is very important, the risk of pipeline leakage must be mitigated to avoid loss of life, costly shutdowns, environmental and property damage. In this project, we have developed reliable and computationally efficient integrated leak detection and localization (iLDL) system for gas transmission pipelines, with short detection delay, fast and accurate leak localization and accurate leak rate quantification. The iLDL system combines acoustic method and mass/volume balance method to enhance the system’s performance.

We were able to detect and locate leaks with leak localisation error of less than 1 % for a high pressure pipeline of 600 m. The iLDL system was also proven to be tested with operating data obtained from a “live” underground gas pipeline.

The iLDL system is beneficial and could be a solution for the pipeline operating companies in all industries: oil, gas, chemical, aviation, mining and water.
