NMC’s Poster Selected for UNESCO World Metrology Day 2026

The National Metrology Centre (NMC) is pleased to announce that our poster has been selected by BIPM in conjunction with World Metrology Day, a global celebration recognising the critical role of measurement in science, industry, trade, and everyday life.

World Metrology Day, celebrated annually on 20 May, marks the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which established global cooperation in measurement. It underpins the International System of Units (SI); the universal language that ensures consistency, comparability, and trust worldwide.

Since 2024, UNESCO formally acknowledges World Metrology Day as an international observance, reflecting its significance in advancing science, education, and global collaboration. By being associated with UNESCO, World Metrology Day is further elevated as a platform to raise awareness among policymakers, industry leaders, and the public on the importance of measurement in building a trusted and resilient global system.

Why It Matters
Metrology plays a critical but often unseen role in modern society. It underpins:

  • International trade by ensuring fair and transparent transactions
  • Innovation and industry through precision manufacturing and quality assurance
  • Health and safety via reliable medical and environmental measurements
  • Sustainability efforts through consistent monitoring of climate and resources

In essence, trusted measurement enables trusted decisions—forming the backbone of effective governance and global cooperation.

About the Poster

Concept Overview
The poster presents metrology as the foundation of trust in policymaking, visualising how scientific measurement flows into credible governance. In an increasingly complex policy environment; spanning science, technology, trade, health, and sustainability—trust is built when evidence is traceable, consistent, and universally understood.

Anchored in the International System of Units (SI), the concept highlights both precision and inclusivity, showing how measurement principles, international cooperation, and diverse representation support fair and globally harmonised policy outcomes.

Visual Narrative
The design adopts a minimalist and forward-looking aesthetic, using colour to convey meaning.

  • The seven SI base units (s, m, kg, A, K, cd, mol) are presented through the official SI colour wheel developed by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
  • Seven coloured spectral streams emerge and flow toward six policymaker silhouettes, the latter representing balanced gender diversity and the global metrology community, including Regional Metrology Organizations (RMOs) and Regional Legal Metrology Organizations (RLMOs).
  • This signifies that measurement informs human judgement before policy is formalised.

The streams then combine into a white scale —symbolising balanced decision-making where evidence is translated into fair and harmonised outcomes.

By avoiding technical imagery, the poster remains accessible to broad audiences while retaining scientific credibility.

 Key Message

“When decisions are measured, trust follows.”

This message reinforces metrology as a cornerstone of governance. By grounding decisions in internationally recognised units and collaborative frameworks, metrology supports economic stability, public safety, sustainability, and societal confidence.

NMC’s Commitment
As Singapore’s national metrology institute, NMC remains committed to advancing measurement science and its applications in policy and industry. This poster reflects our mission to strengthen confidence in measurement and enable trusted, evidence-based decision-making at both national and international levels.
