Director’s Message

Professor Laurent Renia

Immunology is an important discipline within the Biomedical Sciences. The immune system has a fundamental role in protecting against parasitic, bacterial and viral infections. Dysfunction of the immune system can result in a large number of diverse medical conditions, including allergy, autoimmune disease or even cancer. It is essential that as Singapore expands and supports our translational research capabilities, we strengthen the immunology research expertise in the country.

The Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) was launched by the Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR) to achieve this aim, and was inaugurated by Mr S. Iswaran, Minister-of-State for Trade and Industry, on 15 January 2008. Our mandate is to further develop human immunology research, ensure its translation towards the clinical and medical sciences and promote the A*STAR efforts to create an industrial hub for biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies in the heart of Singapore.

Going forward, SIgN will continue to create a strong human immunology knowledge base by developing and supporting innovative research in our core interdisciplinary research areas. We hope that our vibrant and collaborative research environment in Singapore will continue to encourage the exchange of ideas and expertise between academic, industrial and clinical partners.
