Agritech and Aquaculture

With the rising world population and increasingly scarce resources, there is an increase in the demand for food worldwide. This has been exacerbated by issues such as a rising middle class and the threat of climate change. Governments and organisations around the world are faced with challenges in securing healthy, safe and resilient food systems. Considering our space and resource constraints, Singapore is even more vulnerable to external developments in the global food supply chain.

The Singapore Food Story that was announced in early 2019 spells out Singapore’s vision to turn our food challenges into strategic advantages, ensuring a supply of safe food by producing 30 per cent of the nation’s nutritional needs locally by 2030.

To support Singapore’s mission and address challenges such as food security, sustainability, food safety and supply chain management, A*STAR’s Agritech & Aquaculture Horizontal Technology Coordinating Office (A2 HTCO) will develop and implement R&D roadmaps targeting agritech and aquaculture technologies. It will work closely with the Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI), as well as other A*STAR research institutes and institutes of higher learning (IHLs).

In addition, the A2 HTCO will also strengthen partnerships with industry, including MNCs, LLEs, SMEs, agri-food accelerators and start-ups.

Our R&D and Technologies

The A2 HTCO takes a multi-disciplinary approach in building and strengthening new and deep capabilities in areas targeting tropical agritech and aquaculture:

  • Sustainable agritech lighting technologies
  • Sensor and IOT technologies
  • Knowledge-based AI and modelling
  • Knowledge-based image analytics
  • Automation
  • Anti-microbial and anti-viral technologies, encapsulation and pathogen monitoring

For example, A*STAR’s capabilities in the fields of biology and life sciences can help farmers to enhance the quality of yields, and help crops become more resilient against changing climate conditions, by boosting the anti-microbial and anti-viral properties in crops and animals.

A*STAR’s expertise in engineering and ICT, such as robotics and automation, big data analytics and modelling, can help farmers make their processes more efficient and productive, and reduce operation costs. For example, sensors and smart lighting systems can help farmers better detect contaminants and control growth environments. Leveraging data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) can help farmers predict optimal conditions for planting, feeding and harvesting, and monitor their inventory in real-time.
