Social and Cognitive Computing

Social and Cognitive Computing focuses on human-centric AI that lies at the cross-disciplinary convergence of artificial intelligence with cognitive science, psychology, behavioural sciences, computational modelling & simulation. Our goal is to develop technologies and systems with the ability to observe, interpret, understand and anticipate people’s behaviours, in order for AI to work and interact with people more effectively.

Whether you're looking to enhance decision-making, improve customer experiences, or unlock valuable insights from vast amounts of data, social and cognitive computing holds the key to unlocking a new realm of possibilities.

Key Projects

K-EMERGE: Knowledge Extraction, Modelling, and Explainable Reasoning with General Expertise Programme

The programme’s objective is to develop AI to acquire, analyse, organise, understand, and reason about real world knowledge for augmenting human problem solving in complex tasks. It has several components:

  1. Automatic extraction of domain knowledge from text documents.
  2. Incorporation on background physical and commonsense knowledge for reasoning.
  3. Expert-in-the-loop knowledge refinement.
  4. Qualitative reasoning on unified knowledge graph representations K-EMERGE is led by IHPC in collaboration with SMU, NTU and SUTD.

Learning to Understand Human Actions using Neuro-symbolic AI Digital Emotions

This is work funded by an NRF fellowship awarded to Dr Fernando to develop computer vision-based algorithms to understand the intentions underlying human actions. It uses a hybrid neuro-symbolic and logic based approach for action abduction.

Digital Emotions

Digital Emotions, or DE in short, is an integrative technology platform featuring a collection of six A*STAR’s best-in-class technologies developed in the fields of visual, acoustic and linguistic emotion analyses, automatic speech recognition, machine translation, natural language understanding and affective computing. The DE platform is developed through a multi-RI collaborative project spearheaded and supported by A*STAR’s Science and Research Engineering Council, Enterprise and A*ccelerate. The research team comprises scientists and engineers from A*STAR’s Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), and Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC).
