The Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN), a research institute under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and the Medical University of Graz (Med Uni Graz), Austria, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deepen cooperation in immunology and inflammation research and to promote talent development and researcher exchanges between Singapore and Austria.
The MOU was signed by Professor Andrea Kurz, Rector of the Medical University of Graz, and Professor Lam Kong Peng, Executive Director of SIgN, in the presence of Dr Lisa Ooi, Assistant Chief Executive, Biomedical Research Council (BMRC), A*STAR, and His Excellency Peter Storer, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Singapore.
The agreement provides a framework for joint research initiatives, exchanges of PhD students, researchers and scientific staff, and the co-organisation of workshops, seminars and conferences. Both institutions will also explore opportunities for joint funding and the sharing of scientific expertise and knowledge.
The partnership brings together SIgN's internationally recognised strengths in translational and human immunology with Med Uni Graz's extensive clinical research ecosystem and one of Europe's largest academic biobanks. Together, the two institutions will pursue opportunities in areas of mutual interest, including immunology and inflammation, healthy ageing, cancer immunotherapy and precision medicine.
By leveraging their complementary capabilities, SIgN and Med Uni Graz aim to accelerate discoveries in immune mediated diseases, advance translational medicine, and develop innovative solutions to address global health challenges. The partnership will also nurture the next generation of scientific leaders through researcher exchanges and training opportunities, while further deepening scientific ties between Singapore and Austria.
As Singapore and Austria celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, the signing of this MOU marks an important milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation in science and innovation.
