Creating design possibilities
Innovation is critical for businesses to move up the value chain and sharpen their global competitiveness. However, for local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in particular, limited resources and cost challenges can deter them from investing in Research and Development (R&D).
As such, SIMTech, in partnership with Enterprise Singapore (ESG), spearheaded a new initiative, Innovation Factory @ SIMTech.
Aiming to be a one-stop design and solution centre for SMEs, Innovation Factory @ SIMTech is here to help SMEs migrate from component and module manufacturers to product owners, allowing them to venture into higher value markets.
The Innovation Factory provides support in four main stages: Ideation, Design, Engineering and Application (IDEA). As a co-working space for local companies, it enables them to ideate and design their own unique products. The Innovation Factory @ SIMTech not only provides equipment and software tools for prototyping, but also has readily-available design and technology experts who can assist companies in their innovation and productisation journey.
Once a company is ready to scale up production for its newly developed product, it could move from the Innovation Factory @ SIMTech to the complementary Model Factory @ A*STAR to manufacture the product using the most suitable smart manufacturing solutions.
Standing at a floor area of about 1,400 sq ft, the pilot set-up is now fully operational at the SIMTech Valley Block, located at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). A full-scale version is slated to open at CleanTech Park in the Jurong Innovation District in 2021.
