Prof Ong Yew Soon

Prof Ong Yew Soon has been the Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Scientist of A*STAR since May 2019. He is concurrently a President Chair Professor of Computer Science at the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. At NTU, he was Chair of the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) at Nanyang Technological University. Under his stewardship, Prof Ong has advanced SCSE’s standing through various initiatives including the rebranding of the school as “School of Computer Science and Engineering” and launched the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence flagship programme, which was featured by Forbes as one of the ‘10 Best AI And Data Science Undergraduate Courses for 2021’ along with Harvard, MIT, Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University.

Prof. Ong was a Programme Principal Investigator of the Data Analytics & Complex System Programme in the Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate Lab, Director of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (DSAIR) at NTU and established the first cognitive & AI corporate lab in Singapore under a 5-year partnership with Singtel where he currently serves as a co-director. He was a visiting professor at MIT, University of New South Wales, Imperial College London, Honda Research Institute Europe, Germany and others. At the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore, he has served as scientific advisor of the Singapore Digital Economy Initiative and currently a member of the Management & Scientific committee of AI Singapore.

Prof. Ong is founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence and serves as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks & Learning Systems, and others. He has received several IEEE outstanding paper awards and was conferred the IEEE Grade of Fellow for his seminal works in computational and artificial intelligence, specifically memetic computation and applications. He was also listed by Thomson Reuters as a Highly Cited researcher and among the World's Most Influential Scientific Minds. In the industry, he also serves as a scientific technical advisor of British Petroleum and others.
