Atsushi Nitanda is a Principal Scientist at the Centre for Frontier AI Research (CFAR) and Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), A*STAR. Prior to his current position, he was an Associate Professor at the Kyushu Institute of Technology and an Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo. Previously, he worked at NTTDATA-MSI as a researcher. He obtained his Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology from the University of Tokyo in 2018.

His research focuses primarily on the mathematical foundations of machine learning and stochastic optimisation. Specifically, he aims to investigate why machine and deep learning work well through the analysis of optimisation dynamics and to develop efficient optimisation methods. His research interests include stochastic optimisation method for convex/nonconvex problems, variational problem, mean-field optimisation, statistical machine learning, kernel method, and deep learning.

He received the Outstanding Paper Award at ICLR in 2021 and the Dean’s Awards from the University of Tokyo in 2019 and 2009 for academic achievement in doctoral and master’s research and selected as a TMLR expert reviewer. He has served as an action editor for TMLR, editorial board reviewer for JMLR, editorial board for IEICE Transactions, and committee for IBISML.
