National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity (HIP) Medals 2021

Radiologists in Singapore have used artificial intelligence (AI) to help deal with surges in demand for chest X-rays diagnoses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Such innovations have led to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) picking up an Automation, IT and Robotics Innovation Best Practice Medal in this 2021 National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity (HIP) Awards.

The AI-powered system used, called RadiLogic, was jointly developed by A*STAR scientists from the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) and the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), and radiologists from TTSH.

Pneumonia on chest X-rays has been classified as one of the admission criteria for suspected COVID-19 patients. At the peak of the pandemic in Singapore last year, there were more than 500 chest X-rays performed a day, leading to a strain on manpower resources, diagnostic quality and turnaround time.

Enter the RadiLogic solution which can analyse each chest X-ray within three seconds with an accuracy of up to 96 percent. The system flags abnormal cases and enhances the efficiency and diagnostic confidence of radiologists, better assisting frontline staff in deciding appropriate intervention and care for suspected COVID-19 cases.

IHPC is glad to be part of the team, contributing our AI efforts to reduce turnaround time for chest X-rays screening and boost radiologists' diagnostic confidence.
