10th SIMTech-Skills Future Singapore Graduation Ceremony

Upskilling Singapore’s Manufacturing Workforce to Stay Competitive Globally

Graduation1

SIMTech held its 10th SIMTech-Skills Future Singapore (SSG) Graduation Ceremony on 24 November 2021, featuring the institute’s largest graduating cohort to date, with over 900 students from 28 advanced manufacturing training courses and seven SGUnited Skills Programmes, such as the Digital Transformation and Innovation Programme. This year’s event was a hybrid ceremony as required by the current pandemic climate, with 50 participants attending in-person and over 260 virtual attendees gathering online via Zoom. Guest-of-honour Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Manpower graced the event.

The event’s highlights included the announcement of eight new sustainability-related programmes by SIMTech, which will be developed in conjunction with the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC).

Minister Gan explained that these new programmes are part of Skills Future Singapore’s commitment to provide more training programs, to equip our nation’s workforce for the future of manufacturing. “This includes courses which aim to equip individuals with skill sets to assess their company’s carbon footprints, improve energy management with analytics, and develop a holistic action plan for business sustainability,” she said.

Ms Gan continued that Singapore’s manufacturing industry can only stay competitive globally if it is adequately supported by a highly qualified workforce, supplied by a talent pipeline that includes both recent graduates and mid-career workers. This follows the government’s statement in January 2021 about Singapore’s plans to boost its manufacturing sector by 50% by 2030, as part of the Manufacturing 2030 road map.
