In an increasingly technologically complex world, product developers are expected to be masters of creativity, communication and collaboration. They must understand the processes of innovation, problem-solving and strategic decision making. Through this course, participants will learn how to develop new and innovative technology products for the global marketplace, work with cutting-edge design and making technologies including 3D digital design and 3D printing, gain skills and knowledge in design, making, creativity, innovation, technical analysis, and quality management system.
Today’s molecular diagnostics (MDx) is a game-changer for clinical laboratories, offering powerful tools for earlier and higher accurate detection of diseases. On the other hand, microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) technologies offer significant advantages to molecular diagnostics: high speed, low cost, system integration and automation. In a LOC MDx device, various diagnostic steps can be seamlessly integrated into a single microchip. As a result, diagnostic procedures can be dramatically simplified and accelerated. Participants will get the opportunity during this course to practise their product innovation skills in the development of LOC MDx products under the close mentorship of an experienced product designer through group projects. Besides acquiring laboratory skills to operate MDx products, and training to build up a quality management system for medical products, participants will also gain knowledge about MDx fundamentals and applications and the microfluidics components design and fabrication through a combination of lectures and case studies.
Through our innovative Learn-Practise-Implement™ (LPI™) pedagogy plus mentorship training module, participants earn the confidence in new product development, especially for medical products such as molecular diagnostic device.
about the programme
The course integrates the training of important disciplines through 2 key stages:
-
Product Design: Ranging from idea generation, concept formulation and prototyping, to quality management, with the implementing of the skills
- Skills Development: Participants practise skills in the development journey of Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) based molecular diagnostics (MDx) products.
Participants will learn about fundamental design principles as well as engineering concepts that are applied to the actual design processes. They are taught on how to use computer-aided design software and prototyping tools, before progressing to medical diagnostics product innovation and development projects under the guidance of industry experts in this field.
Microfluidics Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) is an emerging technology which enables the miniaturization of medical diagnostic instrument and devices. It needs specific knowledge and skills regarding the microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip fundamentals, immune-sensing and optical detection, nuclei acid and cell analysis, and body blood treatment. This course trains participants to bridge these gaps. Participants learn the latest knowledge on how to transfer a laboratory protocol of body fluid analysis into a miniaturized MDx instrument and cartridge-based on microfluidics Lab-on-a-Chip strategy.
Participants will understand the concepts and applications of MDx technology. With the guidance of their experienced mentors, participants are given hands-on practical experience to practise nuclei acid testing, and experience the New Product Development (NPD) process of medical diagnostic instrument including the establishment of quality management system for medical devices.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for and targeted at engineers or PMETs who have a degree or background knowledge of mechanical and/or product design and interested in gaining knowledge and skills on new product development. It is also recommended for participants seeking skills improvement and knowledge enhancement in medical product development, especially on molecular diagnostics and microfluidic Lab-on-Chip.
