Introduction

This course provides knowledge and techniques of optical design, testing and engineering that are widely used for dimensional measurements and inspection. The course is structured into lectures of fundamental optics principles and case studies. The topics covered include applied optics, lighting design, detection technology, imaging and sensing system. After these topic lectures, the participants will apply what they learn on a personalised case study of their choice. With this extra practice element, the participants are instilling skill and attitude as well as acquiring knowledge. This will enable participants to perform actual tasks in their workplace more effectively and efficiently.

Upon Completion of This Course

Electronic Statement of Attainment (SOA) certificates (in OpenCerts Formats) will be issued by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) to participants who have attended and attained competency in the Singapore Skills Framework training modules. 

Participants must also meet the following criteria to receive their SOAs: 

  • Achieve at least 75% course attendance;
  • Take all assessments; and
  • Pass the course.

Note: Trainees will have to bear the full course fee upon failure to meet either one of the criteria.

In addition, please note that participants' SOA certificates will display the Skills Standard title, not the course title. For this course, the certificate will indicate the Skills Standard: Apply Engineering Optics and Optical Metrology.

SSG SOA

The name printed on the Statement of Attainment (SOA) issued by SkillsFuture Singapore is the Skills Standard title, such as a Technical Skills and Competency (TSC) title, rather than the course title. This is because the SOA is aligned with the national Skills Framework, ensuring consistent recognition across industries and among employers. While the course title describes the learning experience, the SOA certifies the specific nationally recognised competency attained.

Pre-Requisites

  • Applicants should possess a degree in any discipline or a diploma with a minimum of 3 years of related working experience.
  • Applicants who do not have the required academic qualifications are still welcome to apply, but shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview for special approval.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Full Course Fee

The full course fee for this course is $3,000 before funding and prevailing GST.

Long Term Visit Pass Plus (LTVP+) Holders

  • The LTVP+ scheme applies to lawful foreign spouses of Singapore Citizens with (i) at least one Singapore Citizen child or are expecting one from the marriage, or at least three years of marriage, and (ii) where the Singapore Citizen sponsor is able to support the family.
  •  All LTVP+ holders can be identified with their green visit pass cards, with the word ‘PLUS’ printed on the back of the card.

Enhanced Training Support For Small & Medium Enterprise (SMES) Scheme (ETSS)

SMEs that meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Registered or incorporated in Singapore
  • Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million

SME-sponsored Trainees:

  • Must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.
  • Courses have to be fully paid for by the employer.
  • Trainee is not a full-time national serviceman. 

Further Info: This scheme is intended for all organisations, including non-business entities not registered with ACRA e.g. VWOs, societies, etc. Only ministries, statutory boards, and other government agencies are NOT eligible under Enhanced Training Support for SMEs Scheme. Sole proprietorships which meet all of the above criteria are also eligible.

Dr Li Xiang Leon is a Principal Research Engineer at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech). His research focuses on dimensional measurements, defect inspection, interferometry, wavefront sensing, fiber sensors, and bio-imaging, among other areas. His research findings have been applied across various sectors, including semiconductors, precision engineering, construction, and biomedical fields.

Dr Li Hao is a Principal Scientist at SIMTech, where he has over 10 years of experience in the development of complex optical systems for various applications such as optical sensing, bio-optical imaging, nonlinear optics, and X-ray optics. He has developed numerous optical systems for both industrial applications and academic research, including a fiber acousto-optic modulator, a plasmonic bio-sensor, a nonlinear laser scanning microscope, a laser endoscope system, and a coherent EUV source. Dr Li joined SIMTech’s Precision Measurements Group in 2010, where he has led several industry and research projects. Currently, his research focuses on nonlinear optics for super-resolution imaging and tabletop coherent X-ray generation.

Senior Scientist
A*STAR SIMTech

Dr Seck Hon Luen is a Senior Scientist in the Optics and Imaging Systems Group at SIMTech. He is currently focused on developing phase-related tomography technology. Dr Seck earned both his Bachelor and PhD degrees from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He has led projects in phase-contrast imaging, coherent diffraction imaging, and phase reconstruction algorithms. His research interests encompass both coherent and incoherent optical imaging.
