Introduction

This module is specially designed to train participants in several aspects of welding technologies and build up the competencies required to implement the technologies in various industrial applications. These include welding processes such as fusion stir welding, solid state welding, solid-liquid state welding and welding metallurgy. This course also benefits engineers who wish to refresh their fundamentals and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in welding technology. The knowledge gained during this course benefits both the participants who stand to upgrade their individual expertise and their companies with the opportunity to improve their competitiveness. This module will introduce welding processes such as arc welding, laser welding, electron beam welding, friction stir welding, brazing, resistance welding and ultrasonic welding. The process principle, procedure, equipment, and quality control will be dealt with for the specific techniques. Project based case studies will be offered to give participants a more in-depth understanding on the techniques and how to implement them in real industrial applications.

  • Fundamentals of resistance spot welding (RSW) and ultrasonic welding (USW)

  • Project based case studies on friction stir welding, brazing & RSW

Upon Completion of this Course

Participants who successfully complete the required training and attain competency in this module will be awarded a Statement of Attainment (SOA) by the Skills & Workforce Development Agency (SWDA).

The WSQ SOA reflects the Skills Standard title attained by the learner under the national Skills Framework and identifies the training provider. With effect from 1 July 2026, the SOA will also include the title of the completed course, providing clearer context on the course content and competency attained for better recognition by employers.

For this course, the SOA will indicate the following Skills Standard title: 
Evaluate Application of Advanced Metal Welding Processes to Enhance Welding Process for Manufacturing

Participants must also meet the following criteria to receive their SOAs:

  • Achieve at least 75% course attendance;
  • Take all assessments; and
  • Pass the course.

Note: Trainees will have to bear the full course fee upon failure to meet either one of the criteria.

The Statement of Attainment (SOA) issued by the Skills & Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) reflects the relevant Skills Standard title, such as a Technical Skills and Competency (TSC) title. This is because the SOA is aligned with the national Skills Framework, ensuring consistent recognition of competencies across industries and among employers.

While the course title describes the learning experience, the Skills Standard title identifies the specific nationally recognised competency attained.

Pre-Requisites

  • Applicants should possess a degree in any discipline or a diploma with a minimum of 3 years of related working experience.
  • Applicants who do not have the required academic qualifications are still welcome to apply, but shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview for special approval.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

The full course fee for this course is $3,000 before funding and prevailing GST.

Long Term Visit Pass Plus (LTVP+) Holders

  • The LTVP+ scheme applies to lawful foreign spouses of Singapore Citizens with (i) at least one Singapore Citizen child or are expecting one from the marriage, or at least three years of marriage, and (ii) where the Singapore Citizen sponsor is able to support the family.
  •  All LTVP+ holders can be identified with their green visit pass cards, with the word ‘PLUS’ printed on the back of the card.

Enhanced Training Support For Small & Medium Enterprise (SMES) Scheme (ETSS)

SMEs that meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Registered or incorporated in Singapore
  • Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million

SME-sponsored Trainees:

  • Must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.
  • Courses have to be fully paid for by the employer.
  • Trainee is not a full-time national serviceman. 

Further Info: This scheme is intended for all organisations, including non-business entities not registered with ACRA e.g. VWOs, societies, etc. Only ministries, statutory boards, and other government agencies are NOT eligible under Enhanced Training Support for SMEs Scheme. Sole proprietorships which meet all of the above criteria are also eligible.

Mr Pan Dayou is a Lead Research Engineer at A*STAR SIMTech, with over 30 years of experience in Welding & Materials Joining. He started his career in the power generation industry where he worked as a welding engineer for 10 years. His expertise covers welding fabrication for boilers & pressure vessels, valves, structures, aerospace & marine engines, avionic device, battery & fuel-cell systems etc.; welding & brazing of materials ranging from metals to ceramics. In addition, his expertise also extends to the development of welding and allied processes, compliance with welding codes/standards etc. He has published over 30 welding papers. He holds a BEng degree in Welding Technology, a MSc degree in Materials Processing, and a diploma in IWE/IIW.

Consultant

Dr Sun Zheng obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland. He has more than thirty-five years of experience in the field of materials joining, having worked in the research institute, university, and industrial environments. Dr Sun, who specialises in welding processes and welding metallurgy, has published over a hundred and twenty papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He was the joint recipient of the 1995 National Technology Award (currently President’s Technology Award) for contributions to the marine repair processes using electron beam technology. Dr Sun is a Fellow of International Institute of Welding (IIW) and the President of Singapore Welding Society.

Dr Chew Youxiang is a Senior Principal Scientist with SIMTech and works in the area of laser materials processing since 2012. Dr Chew has experience in both experimental process development and numerical modelling of laser-aided additive manufacturing (LAAM) processes. He has continuously worked in extending the capability of using LAAM for 3D additive manufacturing applications in terms of size and complexities of the components built. He has also developed a method to build freeform structures with overhang regions using LAAM and successfully applied the method to build an offshore structural component. Dr Chew’s research interests are on microstructure simulation of LAAM process and enhancing the material properties of existing and new alloy systems.
