SINGAPORE – A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), JTC, and TÜV SÜD signed an agreement at the Energy Innovation event today (23 July 2021) to develop a Green Compass initiative that offers a set of tools and training courses to help businesses across sectors transition to more sustainable and resilient business models.

Under the Green Compass initiative, A*STAR’s SIMTech, JTC, and TÜV SÜD will develop a sustainability framework that includes assessment tools and methodologies to help companies understand how environmentally sustainable they are and identify pathways for them to make operations greener.

The framework will consider a company’s practices in areas such as its product life cycles and management of energy, water, carbon emissions, materials, and waste.

The Green Compass initiative will help companies:

  • Assess how environmentally sustainable they are
  • Conduct a gap analysis to find out what to do to achieve their sustainability goals
  • Prioritise areas for improvement to maximise financial and strategic impact
  • Develop a roadmap to become more environmentally sustainable

A company’s journey under the initiative is mapped out in the Annex. The initiative will come in the form of tools (such as software) and training (workshops and courses), which will be validated and tested by industry players. A*STAR’s SIMTech, JTC, and TÜV SÜD will develop these resources over the next thirteen months.

A*STAR’s SIMTech and TÜV SÜD will contribute know-how and capabilities to make businesses more sustainable. To get feedback from users on the feasibility and usefulness of the initiative, JTC will reach out to its network of industrial tenants to pilot the initiative and kickstart their sustainability journey This is part of JTC’s sustainability initiatives to make industrial estates more environmentally friendly. Its ongoing efforts include tree planting, solarising rooftop spaces and temporary vacant land, as well as kickstarting circular economy initiatives with partners in its estates.
