Coatings are applied on most products across the industry: from precision engineering through electronics, building and construction to machinery and even food as well as food packaging. These may be decorative, corrosion prevention, wear-resistant, or other functional properties. However, there is usually a wide range of effects that can compromise the coatings, such as variation in material composition, changes in application procedure, contaminations, and exposure to certain chemicals/materials or wear conditions during application or use. Ultimately, these effects may lead to coating failure during the manufacturing process. This reduces yield, or in more serious cases, an early breakdown may occur during use and result in a perception of low product quality. Hence, it is essential to understand the factors that lead to coating failures and methods to prevent or mitigate such failures so as to improve product yield and achieve better long term quality.
This module highlights frequent coating failures and methods of recognizing them. Various failure types will be discussed in detail through examples. Participants will be trained on the general framework of coating failure analysis to acquire the skill of identifying the root cause of specific coating defects. The course will also cover various approaches to mitigate the coating failures once the root cause is identified. Wet chemical coatings, paints, electro-deposited and vacuum process deposited coatings will be discussed. In-depth learning will be aided by discussions of case studies and laboratory practice which will be customised to the field of work or interest of participants.
